Recap from the PresseMedia release

  • The latest case is an “authorised officer”. This officer is responsible for issuing detention orders when people arrive, exit or when their detention status changes.
  • Victoria's Minister for Police and Emergency Services Lisa Neville says there will be investigation into the latest case but has said “it doesn't look like there's been a breach”:
"At this stage, when we had a look through just this person's engagement with people as they enter the hotel, as they exit the hotel, as they get moved to health hotels, it appears that there's no breach in that engagement in terms of how close they were, in terms of touching things, in terms of not using infection prevention and control. So we will need to wait for genomics. We'll obviously continue to interview as the Health Department are interview this individual about their activity and see whether there's any other memory they have. Obviously also checking rosters and checking her movement through the hotel whether there was any engagement with anyone who was positive. She's obviously been very cooperative as we saw at the Grand Hyatt worker, she's also been wearing masks as required which is also, I think, an important protection for those who have attended particular exposure sites."
  • Currently have about 80CQV and hotel staff that are stood down or in isolation and having to be tested and in isolation for 14 days from the time of potential exposure.
  • Seventeen people with direct contact with the case have so far been identified as social and household primary close contacts. They are isolating and being tested. This number is likely to increase as investigations continue.
  • Changes being made in the HQ program:
    • Lisa Neville: “Of course, we're still pretty confident about the engineering reports that show that there's no sharing of air between rooms or into common areas, but again we got an occupational physician who's coming in with the engineering team to have a look to see if there's anything else with airconditioning or any risk there.”
    • Have implemented staggered meals
    • Have implemented staff wearing face shields
    • “We have also put in place the face shields with the surgical masks for all staff, some still wear N95s when they're dealing with infectious people, and we have also got the rooms that are buffered.”
  • Three exposure sites related to Holiday Inn currently listed
    • Initial public exposure sites of this case are as follows:
      • Marciano's Cakes in Maidstone between 9:45am - 10:25am on Friday 5 February
      • Dan Murphy's Sunshine between 5:50pm - 6:30pm on Friday 5 February
      • Off Ya Tree Watergardens between 1:17pm - 1:52pm on Saturday 6 February
      • Dan Murphy's in Sunshine between 6:50pm - 7:30pm on Saturday 6 February
    • Anyone who has visited these Tier 1 exposure sites during these dates and times must immediately isolate, get a coronavirus (COVID-19) test and remain isolated for 14 days.
    • "Of course, conversations continue with the positive case, but we are very comfortable and very glad of the information she's provided with us and the good record that she's kept of her movements."
  • Testing:
    • Testing capacity near exposure sites in Melbourne’s north west is being enhanced.
    • Testing sites at Shorten Reserve in West Footscray and Victoria University St Albans campus will both be open until 8pm tonight, and Melbourne Showgrounds until 6:30pm. Closing times may be impacted by wait times.
    • Capacity will also be expanded at other sites and our Rapid Response Testing Team will expand pop up testing, with details to come.
    • The department is publishing expected wait times at testing sites as well as updated information about locations and hours of operation at Where to get tested.
  • Update: Grand Hyatt case:
    • The Department is continuing to follow up close contacts of a Hotel Quarantine worker at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne who has tested positive to coronavirus (COVID-19) on Wednesday 3 February.
    • 61,000 people have been tested since Thursday morning.
    • There are now 1266 primary close contacts in total identified with this case. More than 80 per cent have so far tested negative.
    • This number includes 21 social and household primary close contacts. All have tested negative.
    • There are 661 workplace contacts, who also have all tested negative.
    • There are still 14 identified public exposure sites that were visited by the Grand Hyatt worker.
    • As of this morning, 584 primary close contacts have now been identified in connection with these public exposure sites.
    • Anyone who has visited the exposure sites during these dates and times must immediately isolate, get tested, and remain isolated for 14 days from the time they were at the site - not just until they receive a negative result.
    • Visit Where to get tested to view testing sites nearest you and see real-time waiting information. We thank people for their patience and apologise for any delays.

💩 Wastewater detection

Following the weak detection of viral fragments from wastewater collected from Mt Beauty that was announced yesterday, a new site has been established to facilitate testing in the local area.
The Mt Beauty Pop Up COVID-19 Testing Clinic is open this weekend and will operate from a clinic in Tennis Court Avenue from 9am-4pm on both days. It is a drive-through site and no appointment is required.
Anyone who lives in or has visited the Mt Beauty, Tawonga and Tawonga South area from 26 January to 1 February is urged to get tested for coronavirus (COVID-19) if they have any symptoms, however mild.
Weak detections of the virus in wastewater may be due to people who have recovered from COVID-19 but continue to shed the virus or from an active infectious case.
Wastewater samples are taken at least weekly from 95 wastewater monitoring locations across Victoria, including 70 wastewater treatment plants, for early-warning of coronavirus (COVID-19).
As previously reported, viral fragments have been recently detected in wastewater at several other locations.
While viral fragments have not been detected in samples since taken from these sites, anyone who lives in or has visited Lakes Entrance from 26 to 28 January, Castlemaine, Cowes, Hamilton, Pakenham or Warrnambool from 25 to 27 January, Gisborne from 24 to 26 January, or Leongatha from 17 to 19 January, is urged to get tested if they have any symptoms.
Further information about the wastewater testing program can be found on the Wastewater monitoring page.

From immigration to owning first home in Aus. Outsider's perspective of first home buying and financial security in Melburne 2017-2020.

I wanted to provide my own experience as a foreigner who was daunted by Australian property market, how I got over the sense of hopelessness, and how the earnings/expenses/savings added up for us. Maybe it can be useful to young Australians.
TL:DR It is much easier if there is 2 of you, especially if you are DINKs. Lifestyle nonexistent, saved 3/4 of pay to buy $540k apartment. Easier to save more if you make more -duh. Saved 78%, wife saved 65% of take home pay. I would have bought sooner if I didn't listen to this sub.
When I arrived in Aus in June 2017 as a 25yo on a temp grad visa (from the U.S.) in Brisbane I thought I was going to have pretty easy time finding work and fitting in Aus. I had done research previously and saw salaries were high, rent was cheap, weather was sunny. I wanted to live in Aus permanently and start a career as an engineer.
Like a dumbass, I realised rent is advertised per week only after I arrived! Nobody told me!
I started looking for more permanent accommodation than hostels and couchsurfing and soon realised my entire life savings of $8000, $50k USD in student loans, and joblessness was not going to get me very far. I had few months to figure out my work and living arrangement before my wife would be joining me once our PR was approved.
I struggled to find an entry level job for 5 months in QLD so I gave up on the sunny weather and lower cost of life and came to Melbourne in Oct2017 and took an entry level eng job paying $64k. Wife couldn't find work at all once she arrived so did door to door donations, and finally went into childcare, award rate $20ph
Thanks to flatmates website I was able to find cheap rooms with no bond/income requirements and this is the rent we paid: Hawthorn - 160pw 11/'17 - 04/'18, Kew - 180pw 04/'18 -02/'19, before we got exhausted of living with students and rented a neglected one bedder in Kew for $345pw 02/'19 - 05/'20 which we could afford after my first promotion to $84k.
Before covid (Nov2019)hit wife got lucky and got into her actual field with ~$70k, first career role 5 years after she graduated.
Covid was a blessing for us, as our bills shrank and we were able to save considerably. After our landlord wouldn't negotiate on the rent we left for a CBD hotel accommodation $320 with bills included in a completely dark alleyway shoebox.
During lockdown we were joking how stores are closed and Aussies are forced to save/spend like we do by default. We budget religiously and our combined expences on average are $2.5k per month. No car, single phone, no home internet, never gone out, AliExpress, OpShops, Kmart shopping. And our finances are separated. Everyone who knows us wonders how my wife hasn't left me yet...
Our savings were growing slowly and my only regret is that I parked it in HISA instead of some aggressive index. Balances recorded at the end of each year: 2017 - Me $9.5k, Her: ($-4k) 2018 - Me $47k, Her $7k - started shopping. 2019 - Me $98k, Her $26k -flew home for 2 months When we signed the contract: Nov2020 - Me $160k, Her $64k
It worked out long enough and we have lockdown to thank for tanking the CBD economy and rental prospects, allowing us to buy a 2bed and carpark 80m2 apartment for $540k, (same as paid in 2015, previous rental $600pw) with 30% down. Also, I got a better job at $130k in October so I pulled a trigger on the property and paid off the bulk of my student loans. We got 1.89% with Tic:Toc, and our monthly is $1370 ($600is interest).
Throughout our journey it became apparent wife was not able to save nearly as much despite working more hours. She was spending 34-37% of her pay, while I spent 22% in my worst month in 2019, and during her time in Childcare making $50k saving $2k per month was best we could hope for.
We are still pretty frugal but life definitely got better now that we are paying for our mortgage instead of rent. I just made some $5k on GME (theta gang) so I might splurge and get some furniture, as our place is still mostly empty:)
Edit: mrs didn't even insist on new furniture for the new apartment. All of our stuff is from gumtree.
I followed the sentiment on this sub and made excuses not to buy as "property is sure to fall..." Missed some very lucrative bargains in spring 2019.Edit: fall2019... Early 2019... My brain doesn't have seasons adjusted lol
I regret not buying sooner, but considering I originally shopped for $350k inner east units, I think this is more enjoyable despite the cost creep. I also am weary that I don't have land and that units are mostly flat, but work is here in this gloomy city and I am not the commuting type.

FIRE and Kids – The cost of raising children in Australia

This post has been inspired by this recent podcast featuring three of the biggest names in the Aussie FIRE blogging community, and the follow on discussions in the Aussie Firebug Facebook group about how much it costs to raise kids in Australia. As all three acknowledge they don’t have kids so it’s not something they really have any experience with.
As someone who has two young kids I thought it would be useful to write about it from my perspective. Obviously my situation isn’t the same as everyone else’s, there are plenty of people who would be horrified with how much we’ve spent, and others who would wonder how we manage to spend so little. Everyone’s situation is different, so what works for my family wouldn’t necessarily work or others.
My oldest child has only just started school this year so I can’t really speak from experience beyond the 0-5yo age range, but I’ll talk through some of the typical costs, what we have and haven’t spent money on so far, and what we’re anticipating in the future.
The costs people actually talk about The first two things that almost always come up when people start talking about the cost of babies are prams and carseats. Yes, you can spend a lot of money on these things if you want to, prams in particular. From a quick look at Baby Bunting the most expensive pram there is nearly 3 thousand dollars, and I’m betting that with a few accessories you can easily get over that mark.
No, you do not need to spend that much on a pram. Yes you can probably pick one up on the cheap from Kmart or Target etc for well under a hundred bucks, but it’s probably not going to be as sturdy or hold much of the gear you take with you. Happily a pram is also the sort of thing where you can pretty easily and safely pick one up secondhand or get a hand me down from someone else.
We bought a Babyzen Yoyo, which is basically a small sized pram although it still has enough storage room for us. It folds up so that you can take it on a plane as carry on luggage, is quite light, extremely maneuverable and very sturdy. I’ve taken it running plenty of times, it’s even got a Parkrun PB of 22:06!
This thing is absolutely gold. Unfortunately it’s priced as though it’s made of it as well. There wasn’t an option to get one second hand because it had only just been released so we had to pay full whack. I think we spent over a thousand dollars on it including all the accessories and the lie flat and sit up seats etc.
It was worth every cent. It’s been going for 5 years and 2 kids and is still in great shape, we’ve never had a problem with it at all. My wife tells me it is one of the best things I have ever bought her, although we both use it obviously.
And at the end of the day a one off cost of $1,000 for us as a family is going to have basically zero impact on when we hit FIRE. Plugging the numbers into a compound interest calculator and using 7% annual return over 30 years I miss out on $8,000, which is about a month worth of returns on my target portfolio. I can live with delaying retirement one month for about 5 cumulative years of having a really good pram that works great for us.
Similarly you can spend a fair chunk of money on car seats. This is one of those things that I wouldn’t want to get second hand because you can’t see if they’ve been broken or not and safety is a huge priority for us and presumably everyone else.
Happily car seats don’t tend to cost that much, you can pick one up for a couple hundred bucks or less pretty easily. If you do that it tends to be one for a much shorter age range, say 0-2yrs whereas I think you can get ones which will take your kid from 0-8 but they cost a lot more. In any case per kid you’re probably looking at a thousand bucks total, and this could easily be a lot less.
Again it’s not going to make any appreciable different to us reaching FIRE. So as easy as it is to point at this sort of stuff as being ridiculously expensive and over priced etc, it’s really not going to make much of a difference to most people. Sure you don’t want to spend any more money than you have to, but you also want to make sure you’re getting something that works for you.
The other one off costs There are also a bunch of one off costs for babies and young kids like cots, beds, mattresses, baby carriers etc. From what I’ve been told you want to buy a baby mattress new, but that’s only about a hundred bucks at Target, potentially cheaper elsewhere. We have an Ikea cot which cost about the same, you could easily get one second hand or likely for free just by asking around your friends who will probably be delighted to get it out of their house.
Some people do co-sleeping in which case you don’t need the cot and mattress although you may like to kid yourself that your baby will actually sleep in their own bed, maybe even through the night. It’s nice to pretend sometimes!
As kids get older you’ll need a proper bed for them, again you can probably pick this up second hand pretty cheap and a mattress can be easily had for a couple hundred bucks. So none of these things are really going to have much of an impact so long as you’re a decent saver already.
The big costs you see When you don’t have kids it can be great to live in a studio flat or one bedroom apartment in the inner city close to all the bars and restaurants and all the rest of it. You can stay in your local area and have plenty to keep you entertained, there is probably a supermarket nearby and plenty of public transport so you may not need a car either.
Once you have kids, it’s likely going to be a different story as your priorities change. It may be that you’re happy renting with kids, but lots of people tend to prioritise stability and security when they have kids and that means owning your own home in most cases. I’m not saying everyone will want this, but a lot of people will.
So now that you have kids you almost certainly want a second bedroom and if you’re planning on having more kids maybe a third or fourth etc. Obviously kids can share bedrooms for a while at least but sooner or later they will probably want their own space, as will you.
You’ll also be wanting parks with playgrounds nearby and somewhere you can easily take your kids for a walk or kick a football around, ideally in a good school district which can add a couple hundred thousand dollars to the cost all by itself if you’re in Sydney or Melbourne. And if you want to live somewhere cheaper but send the kids to a good private school, well that can cost anywhere from the low thousands to multiple tens of thousands per year.
Similarly if you didn’t have a car before, you will very likely want one now. I’ve mentioned before that we drive a base model Corolla which works just fine for us so far, but you’re still probably looking at $20k plus if you buy one new, mid teens if you want one used. If you want an SUV or a luxury model car, be prepared to fork out a lot more.
In the same vein if you were previously going on lots of holidays and plan to keep doing so, well you now have at least one more plane ticket to buy, might need a bigger hotel room etc. As I talked about in this post about big ticket items, that all comes at a real cost. We bought land and built a house, so I can say that we spent roughly $100,000 more on that than we would have otherwise.
The ongoing costs There are also a bunch of ongoing costs for kids as well. They need to be fed, they need clothes and shoes, they need medicine, and a bunch of other stuff that costs money. I wrote here about a bunch of things that we do to keep costs down, but the reality is that you still have to fork over a decent chunk of change.
On top of all that contrary to what you might have been told public school is not free, there are a bunch of things that you have to chip in for here as well. We’re not at the stage that we’re forking out a fortune in extra utility bills etc but we certainly use the washing machine a lot more than we would if we didn’t have kids, there are extra lights and tvs etc on so there are extra costs there as well.
There are also a bunch of extra items that you don’t really need to spend, but probably will. For us this includes stuff like swimming lessons, some sports like AusKick (AFL) and Junior Blasters (cricket), occasionally taking them to a theme park or zoo etc. They also get birthday and Christmas presents, and if they get invited to other kids parties they take a store bought gift with them.
The above is about what I think our 5yo costs us at the moment based on our spending, our 2yo is probably about two thirds of that due mostly to her not eating as much and not getting swimming lessons yet, as well as not being in school or doing sports.
I’ve left the holiday line blank because this is hugely variable. Last year we did a trip to the UK and it probably cost us about $3,000 extra between the two of them, next time it will be another couple thousand dollars more because the youngest one will need her own seat rather being on someone’s lap for the flights.
So our spending for our eldest is about two thirds of the costs quoted in this article for a 6yo girl, I would assume that apart from a boy maybe eating a bit more the costs should be fairly similar. The main difference compared to our costs seem to be education and transport.
Also, it was somewhat shocking to me just how expensive swimming lessons are! This is actually at our local council aquatic centre and is the cheapest in town. We do get to use the pool whenever we want, but that only tends to be once or twice a week at most. At least the lessons will hopefully only be for a few years for each child, although after that we may be forking out for something else instead.
The hidden cost of kids The biggest cost is often actually one that doesn’t show up as an expense, the opportunity cost of one parent giving up paid employment entirely for a while or doing part time hours (I’ve used the phrase giving up paid employment here because looking after kids and a house is definitely work!).
If we say that you’re giving up a full time paid job that’s at minimum wage of roughly $20 an hour for 40 hours a week, 48 weeks a year, then that’s $38,400 a year ($33,605 after tax and medicare levy) that the family is giving up for however long this goes on for. If you’d otherwise be earning more than that, then the opportunity cost each year is even higher. On top of that there is the hit to your career and future earnings, because those are definitely going to be impacted as well.
If you’ve got two kids that are separated by two or three years and you as a family want a parent at home until they go to school, well that’s 7 or 8 years of missing out on that money which works out as around $250k based on a full time minimum wage job. I’m pretty hopeful that my wife would be earning more than minimum wage as well so for us it’s even more than that. On the plus side, she gets to spend more time with the kids although that probably feels like a mixed blessing some of the time!
Alternatively if both parents want to keep working then there will likely be childcare costs for the first 4 or 5 years and then before and after school care, as well as missing out on spending time with their kids. Because we haven’t gone down this route I don’t know exactly how much it costs, I do hear plenty of stories about it being $100 a day minimum around where I live and it’s a lot more in capital cities. There are subsidies available for this, but you can pretty easily be spending tens of thousands each year on childcare while they’re young and then once they’re old enough before and after school care.
You may be lucky enough to have grandparents or other family nearby that are happy to help out with this if they live nearby, but that won’t apply to everyone and it’s unlikely to reduce the cost entirely.
The costs that are yet to come At the moment our kids are still young and fairly inexpensive. Between the two of them they tend to eat roughly what a grown adult eats, but from what I’ve been told that will change fairly dramatically as they get older. They’ll need new clothes more frequently, more shoes, potentially play more sports, go on more school excursions, you get the idea.
Education could be another factor. There is a public high school that will be built in the next few years quite close by, and assuming that it’s decent our kids will likely be going there. But if it’s not, then we’ll have to look into private schools which can cost anywhere from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands.
There will be extra curricular stuff as well. Given my wife and I are both horrible at music it seems unlikely that our kids will be doing extra lessons there, but there are plenty of other areas like sport or extra educational activities that we’d be considering. I know a few parents who have kids who are in elite sports programs (as in regional or state teams) and the costs here can very quickly add up, likewise if extra education is needed or wanted then that’ll be an extra expense.
Government and other assistance I know that depending on your circumstances that there can be government assistance in the form of Family Tax Benefit, childcare subsidy and possibly other programs as well. We don’t get any of these which is fine, we don’t need them and they are presumably meant to be for those who do. If you’re not sure if you should be getting any of these then Centrelink does have this payment finder.
We did get the one day a week Kinder program for 3yos and 3 days a week Kinder program for 4yos, although these both also came with costs of roughly $1,500 a year so it actually cost us money, again this is fine, just a reminder that it isn’t actually free.
Depending on your employer you may also be able to get parental leave for a while, and there is a minimum payment which they have to make so long as you’ve met some requirements. Some employers may also have some continuing support with subsidised childcare and the like. None of this was applicable to our situation but at least some of it will likely be available for others.
So what’s the bottom line? For us the biggest actual one off cost so far has been the bigger house and land that we purchased because we wanted our kids to be able to have plenty of space inside and outside the house. That cost about a hundred thousand dollars more than we would have paid if it were just the two of us. All the other stuff like a pram, car seats, cots/beds, mattresses and all the rest of it have been maybe $5,000 total, which is tiny by comparison.
The opportunity cost has been bigger than this though. When we had our first child when we were in Hong Kong my wife wasn’t working much anyway as there just weren’t that many jobs she could do and my wage easily supported both of us so she was doing some very casual part time work and so not doing that work afterwards didn’t impact us much.
In Australia though she probably would have been earning at least $40,000 a year after tax, so we’ve foregone almost $200,000 on an after tax basis there. Which as I’m sure you can imagine has a pretty big impact on when we will hit FIRE, particularly given we’ve got another few years or her not being in paid employment at all and then likely only working part time after that. So I would guess we’ll be looking at forgone earnings of at least $500,000 by the time all is said and done, and it could quite easily be a lot more.
The actual ongoing costs of the kids so far haven’t been too bad. Between the two of them it’s about $8,000 a year at the moment, although we would anticipate that this will go up a fair bit over time as they start eating more and getting into more extra curricular activities. I get that this is spending that isn’t a necessity, but do I really want my kids to miss out on a bunch of fun stuff so that I can retire a year or two earlier? No, no I do not.
So far the total costs look something like this. You can see that by far the biggest cost has been the earnings that we’ve missed out on because my wife has been at home looking after the kids and doing the household stuff (yes I do some of it because I think it’s important that we share the jobs and to role model stuff for the kids, but the reality is that she is at home a lot more than I am and does more of it). Buying a bigger house and land is next, and the actual costs of feeding and clothing and all the other one off stuff for the kids is a tiny proportion of the actual cost.
All up I’m hopeful that we can keep the ongoing costs to somewhere between $125k and $150k per child from birth through to age 18, although if private school is necessary then that will push up the costs a fair bit. This is less than half of what this article suggests, so although it sounds like a lot of money it’s actually fairly frugal by comparison.
To put it in perspective, it’s basically spending about 7 or 8 grand a year on each child. There are plenty of people out there who spend more than that on food alone, let alone the rest of their living expenses.
As I said earlier travel costs are on top of this, and this can increase the costs quite a lot! Travel is a huge part of the reason we’re pursuing HIFIRE, and we want to be taking the kids on plenty of holidays while they’re growing up.
That’s obviously discretionary spending to a large extent, but we do have close family living overseas who we want to see every couple of years or so, and it’s not fair to expect them to always be the ones travelling. I would guess that we’ll be looking at about $50k per kid in travel costs by the time they turn 18. That’s about 3 grand a year, which doesn’t sound wrong based on the cost of international travel. It may be less than that which would be great, but could also be a fair bit more.
So all up for the two kids we’re looking at about a million dollars from birth to age 18. About half of that is the foregone wages from not working, which is by far the biggest impact. The actual cost of the kids is about another 30%, then travel is 10%, another 10% for the bigger house and land. And then right at the end is less than 1% for the one off stuff like prams and baby seats and cots etc.
How could we spend less? Obviously there are other things we could be doing instead to keep the cost down. The biggest expense is the wages that aren’t being earned because my wife is looking after the kids and the household stuff. We could have chosen to have her work and instead pay for childcare and after school care etc.
If we did though then she wouldn’t get to spend as much time with the kids (which she tells would be welcome some of the time!) and there would be a lot more house work and shopping that would need to be done after work or on weekends for both of us, we’d potentially eat out more often as it’d be more of a hassle cooking meals each night, as well as a bunch of other tradeoffs.
So having her stay at home was our preferred method, and thankfully we’re in the financial position where we can afford to do it that way. Other people make different choices, or they’re unfortunately not in a position to make a choice, they need both partners working or if they’re a single parent have to do it this way.
We could have also gone with a smaller house and less of a backyard. I shared a bedroom with my brother for part of our childhood and we both managed fine. It’s not ideal, but it’s certainly doable, and we could have saved a lot of money by having a smaller house. Again we chose not to because we wanted a bigger house and a decent sized backyard for them to be able to run around in and we can afford it.
We don’t have to travel, although it’d be a bit rough expecting family to travel overseas to see us every year or two and then not reciprocating. Still, that would save a fair amount of money.
It’s pretty hard to say how things will work out with the actual costs of raising the kids. I know roughly what we’ve spent so far, but it’s pretty difficult to know what we’ll be spending in future as they get older. They’re likely to be eating a fair bit more food, s they grow they’ll need new clothes and shoes, they’ll presumably be playing sport and doing other extra curricular stuff which will all cost money.
$150k per kid from 0 to 18 seems like it’s a lot less than what it costs most people, but then we already live a fair bit more cheaply than most others so maybe it’s about right.
At the end of the day we’re happy with the choices that we’ve made so far, but there has certainly been some room to have spent less money than what we have, or to have had more money coming in through both of us being in paid employment. Obviously it has an impact on when we will hit our FIRE number, but I’d rather take a little bit longer to get there than to make different tradeoffs along the way.
Have you got kids or are thinking about having them? How do you think it will impact on your FIRE journey?

I am 31 years old with a Joint income of $210,000AUD ($137,000 USD) live in Melbourne, Australia and work as a Program Director in Higher Education Husband (H) works in television.
This diary is in AUD. At the time of writing, $1AUD = $0.63USD.
Assets and debts
Retirement: Me: $85,000 Husband (H)H: $80,000
In Australia employers must pay a percentage of the employee’s salary into a superannuation account. Minimum payment is 9.5%. For 7 years I worked in the higher education sector, where employers paid 17.5%. This is why my balance is higher than my husband, who was working full time for 3 years before I graduated.
Mortgage: $328,859
We purchased a 4-bedroom home in our state in 2016 to the value of $426,000. Housing is much more affordable outside of big cities. We were able to purchase this property thanks to H’s incredible savings and made a down payment of 90k. We currently have tenants in this home (income listed below) whilst we live in the capital city. In Australia there can be tax breaks for ‘negative gearing’, aka renting out a property for less than you pay for it (mortgage repayments). We are just negatively geared, not out of design but more the rental market. We are looking to purchase a second home to reside in our city in late 2020/early 2021.
Savings: $20,000
I resigned from an unhappy workplace in January 2017 and didn’t start working again until June 2017. We were lucky to live in a LCOL area (regional state) and have savings and a good income from my husband, but financially this set us back a good 12 months. We funded a 5-week Europe trip in 2019 (how good was travel!) and were able to do from savings. In this current environment it’s great to know we have cash. I’d like to build a solid emergency fund, and part of compiling all these stats for the MD will be getting an accurate picture of our outgoings to inform how much a 3-month emergency fund is!
We have a number of offset accounts under our mortgage; a central one that our pay goes into, then a number of allocated spending accounts (groceries, bills and expenses, personal spending accounts). I’ll detail the amounts in monthly expenses, but this normally means we have another 3-5k cash on top of our savings.
At present, I manage our finances. I was irresponsible with money throughout my 20’s and when we got married, bought a house and combined our finances, H asked that I take control of the finances to learn how to be responsible (it’s worked!). We chat reg
Student Loan Debt: $35,000 (at its highest, $52,000 for an undergraduate double degree and a Masters degree)
In Australia students participate in the HELP scheme (Higher Education Loan Programme), where your place is funded by the government and you do not have to pay upfront fees. Instead, you pay back percentage depending on your income. Your repayments start at an income level of $42,000. At my current income I repay about $7000, taken out of my tax return at the end of financial year. If I keep earning my current wage, it will be paid off in 5 years, but I expect a break in my career soon in starting a family.
Car: Paid off, probably worth a box of chocolates if it breaks down.
Income
Monthly take home: Me: $5924 (paid fortnightly x 2262 (105k before tax annually) H: $5640 (paid weekly x 1410) (105k before tax annually)
Rental income: $400 weekly before expenses, we normally pay $50 a month in costs to the real estate. We get whatever the tenants have paid in, so if they’ve not paid for that fortnight or week, we get what they have paid in. A good lesson for us in money management and cash flow.
H gets a handful of freelance jobs a year. We normally save 1/3 of this income just in case for tax time. I would say he earns between $7-15,000
I am eligible for bonuses. I have received 10k this financial year.
Weekly expenses:
Transport: $40 a week. H normally rides to and from work but is recovering from surgery. Today was his first day riding again! I walk to a tram and travel within the free tram zone.
Monthly Expenses:
Rent: $2262 a month
Mortgage: $1688
Utilities: Approx $80 a month for electricity, $15-20 for water, $0 for gas.
Wifi: $59.95
Phones: $164 for both plans and handset repayments. Both plans are up this year, we will keep our handsets and go to a cheaper prepaid arrangement, most likely 1/3 of what we are currently paying.
Gym/workouts: Currently suspended, but I pay $70 a month for a membership at Anytime Fitness. Got a good 6 weeks back at the gym before Covid! Our apartment building has a small gym, pool and sauna which H uses. I work with an online trainer around meal and workout plans, as well as weekly check-ins for $200 a month.
Subscriptions: Spotify Family $17.99 (shared between our respective devices, my parents, H’s parents) Netflix $15 (H shares logins with colleagues at work in exchange for Stan and Amazon Prime, and my parents mooch from our Netflix account).
Donations: $15 to the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre, $15 to an organisation we volunteered with in Nairobi providing education and $35 to a Foodbank charity servicing the state.
Health insurance: $368.45 We are looking to start a family in the next 12 months, and in order to receive private health cover for pregnancy expenses, you have to be on the policy for at least 12 months prior to needing to use it.
Petrol: Maybe $50? We are lucky to get the car out once a week, normally for groceries.
Football membership: $40. I pay for a club membership for myself x 2 (men’s and women’s leagues) and my dad. It gets us 11 x general admission seats a year and the women’s membership gets us 3 x general admission seats to the men’s (women’s AFL is free admission at the moment). H normally comes along to a few games a year so the GA tickets come in handy.
Pet insurance: $98.69. We have a flat-nosed dog and the breed is known for expensive bills. Have we potentially spent more on insurance than if we ever had a vet bill? Potentially. But given we weren’t cash rich for a long time, this has been a source of comfort.
Quarterly expenses:
Rates for property: $530 Water rates for property: $260
Annual expenses:
Landlord insurance: $1100 Car insurance: $550 Car registration: $750 Mortgage package fees: $395
Our incomes go into one account and once a fortnight, we send all the money off to other areas. We currently have $1000 allocated to savings, $800 to groceries, dinners, social nights (lol. Remember those), $800 to bills/insurance (any utilities) and $200 each to a ‘pocket money’ account for judgement free shopping. Any big purchases we chat through.
COVID status at the time of writing (late May)
Australia is thankfully in a very safe position, having chosen to close borders quite quickly (to non-citizens or residents) and implement social lockdowns. At the time of writing, people in my state are able to see 5 other people in your home, or gather in groups of 10 outdoors, implementing social distancing measures. We have only been in this ‘stage’ for a week; prior to this we could only leave home for essential reasons. Cafes, restaurants and pubs can reopen on June 1 for 20 patrons at a time. Gyms, beauty salons etc remain closed. Other states of Australia have slightly different approaches depending on the status of the virus, and some remain closed off to people from other states visiting without a compassionate reason. Any citizens or residents returning to Aus from overseas must complete a 14-day quarantine in a hotel at the expense of the government.
EDIT: Restrictions were further relaxed in my state, but have been returned to this status once more due to a spike in cases
Day 1 (Monday)
9am In at work to start the week! My role involves essential services. We balanced work from home/teams on site and are starting to transition back to working from the office, appropriately spaced. Best work friend gives me homemade beef ragu AND a coffee, what a start to the day! I keep breakfast at work, oat sachets.
11am Check in with my online personal trainer. I’ve been tracking macros off and on for the last nearly 3 years and I think I’m nearly happy/secure enough to step away from tracking and live a more mindful/intuitive way of living. Send off my comparison shots and a check-in file and have a good chat about my goals for the week. I pay her $200 a month for her service (paid two weeks ago, tracked in monthly expenses).
1pm Have worked through a number of communications documents this morning and am now breaking for lunch. Leftovers hit the spot. Purchase a San Pellegrino sparkling from the vending machine ($2.50).
4pm Pay $77 for a handful of meals from my friend’s catering company. The business they have the tender for has been closed and they’ve been trying to survive off doing meal packs for friends and family. This gets me some beautiful stuffed chicken breasts, soup, and a couple of reheatable meals. We’ve been trying to support local as neither of our workplaces or incomes have been affected by Covid thus far. My sector relies heavily on international students and open borders, so we’ve been trying to balance treat yo self and saving for our future selves. ($77)
8pm Home, walked the dog, did a workout with H, had leftovers for dinner and launch into the final two episodes of The Last Dance. What an amazing series. Having grown up during peak Jordan time but being in Australia, our only real exposure to him was Space Jam.
Total: $79.50
Day 2 (Tuesday)
9am At the desk, bowl of oats, browsing various online shopping websites because I feel frumpy this morning and am frustrated with the state of my wardrobe. Remember that H has the day off today and will most likely spend money on his various home improvement projects and decide to keep my impulse spending for another day.
10am Coffee run for those in the office, 6 of us today! I pay $26. I normally only have to pay once a week, every other day of the week someone else in our ‘shout’ will pay. ($26)
3pm We received a call from our real estate who manage our rental property and they’ve said the tenants are in arrears and asking for flexibility with their rent. They’ve seen a reduction in work due to Covid. They offer half rent, and we ask the real estate to ensure that they won’t be stretching themselves on half rent. In our state there is a moratorium on evictions, so if the tenants can’t pay/don’t pay half rent, we will need to wear the arrears until we can come to another arrangement. Our tenants are a family and we don’t wish to place any further stress on their current situation. I’m very grateful for our financial security at this time.
3.30pm Withdraw $50 to send in a card to friends in another state. They recently did us a favour and refuse to give me their bank details to reimburse them, so I send a card to their children with cash. So now they have no excuse but to accept it 😉
7pm Meet H and our dog on my walk home and go via the shops to get a tub of ice cream. Eat garbage for dinner and watch Masterchef. ($12) Check H’s spending from his home improvement day, only $41.47 at a local hardware store!
Total: 129.47
Day 3 (Wednesday)
8.30am Walk to work via the shops for some sandwich thins to have for breakfast with avocado, lemon and salt. ($8.45). H goes to physio ($61, subsidised with our private health) and purchases a weekly train pass ($40) as it’s too wet to ride.
9.30am Purchase a new pair of Superga sneakers through Click Frenzy at 30% off. I am on my feet a lot for work and walk to and from work. I normally average 15k steps a day. I find I go through 2 pairs of these sorts of sneakers a year. ($62)
11am Organise click and collect groceries for Sunday. Our card will be charged then.
1pm Pay for a food delivery for a girlfriend in a far-flung city up north who has a 7-month-old and no parental/family support ($87). One less dinner to cook! H gets lunch (10.90).
2.30pm Get an email from our real estate. The tenants have written and said they can now pay for their rent going forward but are currently in arrears for this month. We reply and ask them to ensure they feel comfortable paying the full amount going forward and offer flexibility for the current arrears.
5.30pm Swing by one of the supermarkets on the walk home to grab spring onions for dinner. Can’t resist the new chocolate coated raspberries. (7.75)
Total: $277.10
Day four (Thursday)
12pm Laksa lunch and a coke ($14.50) with a couple of the work girls. H gets lunch ($12) and picks up his medication from the chemist (77.47).
Total: $103.97
Day five (Friday)
11am Purchase a new screen protector and some supplements for the doggo via Amazon (70.97). Our Amazon is not at super-fast prime status here, but it’s the only place I can get these particular supplements.
12.30pm Leftovers lunch courtesy of the bestie’s food drop off. Supplemented with Coke from the vending machine ($2.50). H gets lunch ($10.90)
2pm Resucscribe to a fitness app, Keep It Cleaner. Pay for 3 months ($49.99)
6pm Purchase 2 pizzas ($46) for dinner from our local to share with my BIL even though we were going to have leftovers! I supplement my slices with salad. Then undo all my good work by whipping up a golden syrup pudding for dessert.
Total: $180.36
Day six (Saturday) Note – All actions taken below are permitted by the government of our state. I understand that not everyone has the same freedom of movement at the moment. Or perhaps you do and wish you didn’t in order to get the virus under control. For those of you who can’t be with your loved ones at the moment, I’m thinking of you x
8.40am Up and hit the road to visit our families for the first time in 10 weeks. We stop via a bakery for some well-renowned pastries and breakfast ($80 – I know. You only visit your families for the first time after a global pandemic once?) which go dramatically underappreciated by our families (I guess we were the gift?)
3.30pm After spending time with both sets of parents, siblings and niece and nephew, we hit the road with a VERY full and happy heart. I swing via McDonald’s for iced lattes for the drive home ($8.55). We also stop for petrol ($41.76)
8pm A famous Australian band, Powderfinger, show a reunion special on YouTube 10 years after they broke up, to raise money for Beyond Blue (Mental Health) and Support Act (a fund for performance artists and crew). I donate $50 plus the transaction fee ($52).
Total: $182.31
Day seven (Sunday)
9am Sunday walk with the doggo. Coffee to warm us on the way ($9.88)
10am We are charged for our groceries ($103.30) and collect them. Pick up assorted home supplies for Sunday chore day ($64.48)
12pm Walk into the CBD to pick up a new clothes airer from Target. I think our version of Target isn’t as hardcore as the US? Whereas our Kmart is the place you walk into for one thing and walk out with 10. Nevertheless, we walk out with two birthday gifts for upcoming child birthdays ($34). H also picks up some computer cable (no idea what) ($10.13) H wants Maccas ($11.55) and I grab a premade meal at our local grocer ($12.45).
Total: $235.91
Overall total: $1188.62
Food and Drink - $607.71
Fun/entertainment - $0
Home and health - $311.03
Clothes and beauty $62
Transport – $81.76
Other $136
Conclusion
This was such a great exercise! I knew prior to sitting down and writing this that more days than not I reach for my card to pay for something online. Part of me goes ‘well I manage the budget, as well as the mental load of birthday gifts and the like’ and then another part goes ‘but do you have to buy that’. I hand on heart can say that writing this made me put my card away more than once, particularly when it came to frivolous online spending. So that kind of accountability could happen going forward, perhaps by inviting H to have eyes on expenditure day-to-day?
If this was an ordinary, non-Covid week we probably would have eaten out of an evening or weekend, but H wouldn’t have bought his lunch as many times! We try to meal prep for lunches to avoid unnecessary expenditure but have been a lot more flexible on ourselves during this time as we have both been quite busy at work. I’ve found our grocery spend to be higher as we are spending more time at home.
Finally, I understand that now is a really hard time for a lot of people. We are extremely lucky in Australia and are relatively well-supported by our government. If you know of any great grass-roots organisations O/S who are doing pivotal work in their areas, give them a shout out! I would love to pay my good situation forward.

Australia Goes Back to the 1980s With Its Economy Closed to World

Australia’s success in curbing Covid-19 infections is allowing it to slowly ease some restrictions even as it remains largely closed off from the rest of the world, taking its economy back to the pre-globalization era.
Mining and agriculture continue to support exports and a government-sponsored group is looking at ways to revive manufacturing. But the flow of foreign tourists, students and immigrants has been frozen, pinning hopes for a rebound on local consumption.
The closed borders and domestic reliance has the economy harking back to the 1980s, before the lifting of tariffs opened up trade and Paul Hogan offered to put another shrimp on the Barbie for international visitors.
Services Driven Nearly two-thirds of economic output from service industries
Australian Bureau of Statistics
Nominal gross value added, 2018-19
The capacity of services to quickly turnaround and the fact Aussies aren’t blowing savings on holidays abroad could help the nation fare better than many developed-world peers. Much will depend on the mood of households as unemployment rises, with a poor construction outlook adding to headwinds.
What Bloomberg’s Economists Say “Close to 1 million Australians per month traveled overseas in 2019. They will now be looking for a change of destination, heading to Noosa instead of Nusa Dua; Port Douglas, not Penang; and catching up with friends at bars in Melbourne Laneways, instead of Hong Kong’s mid levels. Containment measures change the economics of international travel.”
James McIntyre, economist
Household consumption, which makes up around 55% of the economy, has been boosted on the one hand by people stocking up on essentials during the lockdown, but hammered on the other as they couldn’t eat out or go to the movies. Shops and restaurants are gradually reopening but, for consumption to drive any rebound, households must put aside concerns over job security and debt to drive spending. That may be tough.
Wesfarmers Ltd. is seeing shift in consumer behavior across its retail portfolio. Home improvement and office products stores, Bunnings and Officeworks, have seen significant uplift in sales, while general merchandise stores, Target and Kmart, have seen sales slow.
Pessimistic households have consumption outlook seeming bleak Even before Covid-19, Australian households were among the most indebted in the developed world, with debt almost double disposable income. The threat of unemployment to people’s ability to meet their debts is now key, and the Reserve Bank of Australia has long acknowledged it as a major risk facing the economy.
The unemployment rate is currently 6.2%, with the central bank expecting it to peak at around 10%. Banks are offering repayment holidays to help tide homeowners over and have quadrupled provisions for an expected surge in bad debts.
Australia Passes Massive Stimulus Measures as Virus Spreads People wait in line outside a Centrelink office in the Bondi Junction suburb of Sydney, March 2020.Photographer: Brendon Thorne/Bloomberg The absence of skilled migration due to closed national borders will also hit pause on what had been steady stream of profitable mortgage lending for the banks. That could flow through to housing prices if sustained.
Commonwealth Bank of Australia said its base case is for an 11% fall in home prices, though in a prolonged downturn a cumulative 32% slump is possible. National Australia Bank Ltd. said in a severe downturn, prices could plummet 21% this year.
Uncertainty and job insecurity impacting property market Residential construction typically closely follows house price movements, and the sector was already scaling back activity following the previous flood of new stock still working its way into the market.
The RBA earlier this month said that indications from the initial stages of the development process suggests demand for new housing “has deteriorated significantly.” It expects dwelling investment to plunge 17% in the 12 months through June and remain a drag on growth until 2021.
Property investors have been hit by the six month moratorium on tenancy evictions during coronavirus. Without renewed interest from investors, it’s challenging to get a new apartment development, particularly of any size, into construction.
The same holds for business investment. Unless the project was already underway, or is related to creating a covid-safe environment, capital expenditure plans have been parked until demand returns.
Natural Endowment Things look brighter as you leave the cities. Internationally, Australia is known as a commodity powerhouse. While it accounts for just 10% of output, it is a key source of export income and prosperity in the country.
Iron ore shipments from Port Hedland, a key export hub, hit a record for April, while gold sales from Perth Mint -- the main refiner -- also surged. Fortescue Metals Group Ltd. lifted its projected annual iron ore shipments in a wager on China’s recovery. “We are selling everything we can possibly produce,” Chairman Andrew Forrest says.
Net exports important source of economic growth It’s less rosy for the liquefied natural gas producers. Just as the coronavirus sent the global economy into lockdown, Russia and Saudi Arabia began a standoff that sent oil prices tumbling below zero.
Top producers Woodside Petroleum Ltd. and Santos Ltd. have slashed spending plans and deferred flagship growth projects -- worth over $15 billion -- in line with drastic steps by energy majors worldwide to hunker down during the pandemic.
On The Sheep’s Back Virus Fears Grow In Sydney As Growing GDP Expected To Be Hit Rolls of toilet papers sit in an empty section of a supermarket in Sydney, March 2020..Photographer: Brendon Thorne/Bloomberg As supermarket shelves were stripped bare, a panicked nation was reminded of the sheer mass of food the country’s farmers produce. Domestic food production services more than 90% of fresh produce sold in supermarkets and still is able to more than match that amount in exports.
The industry could also become an unexpected source of employment. Backpackers and workers from Pacific Islands flock to rural areas to pick up work with seasonal tasks, but with borders shut and jobs being lost across the economy, farmers are likely turn to the local community for the extra labor.
Other producers have greater worries. Barley and meat exporters have been caught in China’s crosshairs in retaliation for Australia’s public call for an independent investigation of the coronavirus outbreak, while the wine industry is looking on nervously.
It’s been a tough year for wine, even before the virus. Clonakilla winery in New South Wales, north of Canberra, decided against producing a 2020 vintage after analysis showed unacceptably high levels of smoke taint from wildfires over the summer.
Exploring Our Own Backyard Australia's China Reliance Backfires as Virus Fallout Spreads Students sit on the grass at the University of Sydney, Feb. 2020.Photographer: Brent Lewin/Bloomberg The education industry was one of the first to feel the pinch from coronavirus restrictions. When the government imposed travel bans on flights from China in February, around 100,000 international students were unable to enter Australia to begin the academic year and left universities bracing for a costly fallout.
The University of Sydney, where students from China represented nearly one-quarter of the total student body, projected a A$470 million loss this year. Other institutions, including the University of Melbourne and Monash University, are bracing for similar hits. Even smaller regional institutions that don’t attract nearly the same level of international students have been affected.
With a lot of money at stake, there could be a relaxation of international border restrictions for students to study in Australia, before leisure travelers are allowed. But for businesses catering toward an offshore audience, demand is unlikely to snap back.
Qantas Airways Ltd. is currently operating just 1% of its network and has canceled overseas fights until at least the end of July. Its main competitor, Virgin Australia Holdings Ltd., collapsed into administration in April.
Virgin Australia Collapses After Pandemic Halts Air Travel Virgin Australia check-in kiosks inside a deserted Sydney Airport, April 2020. Photographer Brendon Thorne/Bloomberg Crown Resorts Ltd. and Star Entertainment Group Ltd., which both target big-spending visitors from Asia, were forced to close their casinos in Australia as the country locked down. Crown is just months away from completing a A$2.2 billion luxury gaming resort in Sydney.
The tourism industry was already reeling from the wave of cancellations following the December and January wildfires. The silver lining is that Australians will have no option but to spend holidays on home soil once inter-state travel is allowed again.

ICHPIG Review

Hey Guys,
Since there isn't a review on ICHPIG , I thought I'd create a post here and share my 2 cents on their product and quality. As a background, I buy lots of clothes from brands like nike and adidas simply because I like it and I've found them to be pretty consistent in their quality. But due to the issues brought into light from the recent pandemic, I found that I've been wearing products largely manufactured in the east. Hence, I decided to find products that are wholly owned and manufactured in Australia, trying to slowly shift away from buying commercial brands and support local made products. Although there are not many easily known australian brands, I searched around the internet/social media and found ICHPIG. ICHPIG is a melbourne based brand that manufactures all of its products in melbourne. They sell pretty much every type of garment ranging from hoodies to hats and more recently, face masks.
For this review, I'm gonna compare a sweatshirt from ICHPIG, more specifically a Box90 Crew, against the overall quality of sweatshirts from nike/adidas.
  1. ICHPIG stuff are pretty pricey. A lot more pricey than commercial brands. My sweatshirt costed 140$ and extra for shipping. If you buy 250$ worth of stuff, you'd get free shipping. From a consumer POV, you could easily buy a sweat from adidas at around half that price mark or cheaper during sale or from online stores.
  2. Their website is pretty comprehensive, with a lot of details on specs, size guides, etc. That's pretty neat considering they are a small locally run company. They offer easy exchanges to return a product for exchange if you're unhappy about size, etc. At the moment, I can't comment on this aspect.
  3. Their product designs are also nice, although this comment may divide the community because everyone has a different style sense. I found their products to be reminiscent of the 90's and somewhat retro-ey which is one of the reasons why I chose to buy something from them because I felt I didn't have any 90's type clothing. Most of my stuff were athletic, modern and more recently, techwear type. So I thought this would be a refreshing addition to my wardrobe, taking a side step from keeping up with the ever changing fashion trend.
  4. Now about quality.. Honestly, after reading their product descriptions and looking at their images (just the product and on person), I was anticipating the product to live up to it. But I personally found that I couldn't relate the sweatshirt firstly to its price mark, and secondly to the quality it advertised. To be very frank, It felt almost identical to a normal Kmart sweat you'd easily get for maybe under 20$. I've owned a few in the past as my daily beaters, and this felt almost identical. I'd probably refer to it as a better quality Kmart sweat. But nowhere near the quality of my adidas sweatshirt. After close inspection, my adidas sweat was apparently made of french cotton terry vs the ICHPIG one which was a "Heavy-weight fleecy construction". That may in fact certainly explain the difference in quality **** if there are any garment experts, please feel free to educate me on this observation. I'm keen to learn and know about this :) **** Despite being described as heavyweight, it’s actually quite light and stiff out of the packing. A gentle wash in the washing machine made it slightly more pliable. Comparatively, I bought my adidas sweat for around 60-70$, which is considerably cheaper. Again, I'm highlighting the price difference from a consumer POV. Certainly, it will be more expensive to manufacture locally vs in sweatshop. But the question is how much more and where's this substantially increased amount of money going towards? Moreover, you could also factor in brand recognition.
  5. On the other hand, customer service is pretty good. You could contact them via email or through one their social media channels and expect a reply in a decent amount of time. They are also a humble and cool bunch of dudes working, so you're in good hands :) The only con I can think of is, I couldn't find a telephone service to contact them if you are keen to ask some questions before you purchase anything. After purchase, however, you'll get a text from them and you can use this to communicate further regarding orders and stuff.
Overall, I'm cool with my sweatshirt from ICHPIG. It's certainly unique and looks pretty decent. I'm not dissatisfied nor overly happy about it. I feel pretty neutral because I liked the design, the fact that its fully australian made and also taking a break from always buying commercial brands. However, I personally couldn't justify the price point and the quality that came at that price point. So it's really up to an individual to decide as to why you'd want something like this. There are certainly some things that are appealing and worth considering. But there are also some factors that might deter you. In short, if you could you easily afford it and want to rep something unique and australia made, this might entice you. However, if you're economical, concerned about brand recognition and the quality of things you wear, you might prefer sticking with your usual route :)
Cheers for taking the time to read this review!! Hope it's of some use to you. Feel free to ask any questions on this post or even share your experiences/views on the aspects shared in the post :)
Thank you and have a dope day! - Z

Getting into fishing off the pier (Docklands Melbourne), need advice if possible.

G'day,

So I went fishing with the old man a couple weeks ago and had an itch to get some gear of my own and have a crack at fishing again. I don't really have any idea what I'm doing, I got prawns and bluebait(?) from a fishing shop along with tuna oil or some shit that I soak the bait in.
I've just got a cheapo rod from Kmart and I'm fishing off the piers around Docklands Melbourne. Apparently there is lots of Bream around there that live around all the poles and such in the water and I've even seen that there is Flathead in there. I went two nights ago for about 2 hours and didn't get a bite or anything, went out yesterday for about 4 hours total without a bite, and today I went out this morning at about 8 for an hour, then at about 5pm until 9:30pm and haven't gotten a bite.
I have tried letting the rod just sit still in deeper water, mid way down, fairly shallow. I try give it a tug here and there to make it look my alive, and I've tried bringing it up slowly from down deep.
The blokes that were set up near me caught a fish within 20 minutes of being there too the bastards.
So I'm not sure if I just have shit luck, or if I'm doing something wrong, or don't know what a bite feels like. Just wondering if any experienced anglers could give us some tips?

Cheers!

Legend:
Shit-tier: The stores that are a common beginner's trap, and should be avoided. Often have poor build quality, fit, and just look plain bad.
Mall-tieFast Fashion: Good for basics; t-shirts, underwear, socks, etc. Recommended for poorfags. Buy sparsely and do NOT build a large wardrobe with these stores.
Low-tier: Bit more pricey, but at this stage odds are you'll be dressed much better than people around you. Build quality is a cut above mall tier. Tumblr-core usually fits around here.
Medium-tier: Some entry level designer pieces, and at this point the clothes are very "nice". Quality mensweastreetwear often fits in this category. Fit and build quality are high.
High-tier: High fashion, designer pieces. Top tier menswear as well as some light gothninja pieces can be found here.
Artisanal-tier: Hand-made with skill that approaches that of an artist. This has nothing to do with design and everything to do with production methods. A boring design done fully by hand (example: a full bespoke two button suit) is 'artisanal'. Many designers source their clothing from artisans, but not all designer clothing is 'artisanal'.
Note: Some US/UK/NZ stores will ship to Australia, so check them out too. End clothing, East Dane and Revolve are some of the best, I'm in the process of making a similar list for those but it's quite a bit harder to source information.
Any feedback is much appreciated!

Plane Clothes Low Not the best quality or cuts, fairly cheap basics http://www.planeclothes.com.au/
Politix Mall/Fast fashion Plenty of menswear staples. http://www.politix.com.au/
Prime Medium Some nice street/dress wear, sells Levi's. http://primeonline.myshopify.com/
Real Store Low Based in Adelaide, has Carharrt and similar, a lot of simple stuff http://www.realstore.com.au/
RM Williams Medium Australian made boots and clothing, good quality http://www.rmwilliams.com.au/
Roger David/RDX Mall/Fast fashion Although loved by some, the truth is, Roger David is overpriced for what they offer. Selling poorly constructed outerwear and with a limited range, you are better off looking in Industrie. RD may have some alright basics every now and then such as chinos and t-shirts and their knits may be decent, but the rest is RDX crap that is not worth your money. http://www.rogerdavid.com.au/
Salvos/Vinnies Uncategorized Thrift shopping is pretty common in Australia, great for the tumblrcore look. Alter clothing to fit. N/A
Saxony Medium Limited range, avant-garde style, decent quality. http://www.saxony.com.au/
Sneakerboy High Stocks footwear from Balmain, Margiela, Rick Owens, etc. occasionally has massive sales http://www.sneakerboy.com.au/
Spares Low Melbourne streetwear store, stocks Ebbets Field Flannels, http://www.sparesstore.com.au/
Somewhere Low Alternative/tumblrcore pieces http://someplace.com.au/index.php
Supply Store Medium Plenty of streetwear, can be very pricey though. http://www.supplystore.com.au/
SurfStitch Mall/Fast fashion The majority of stuff here is rubbish surf brands but there are a lot of brands stocked that aren't normally found in surf shops like Pendleton, Red Wings etc. also free express shipping and free returns http://www.surfstitch.com/
Surf Shops Shit Clothes might be alright but you'll be paying out the ass for something you can get elsewhere without a tacky logo on it. Various
Tarocash Shit Pretty much identical to Connor, stay away. http://www.tarocash.com.au/
The Annex Medium (Sydney) Classic boutique clothing, designer styles. http://www.theannex.com.au/‎
The Iconic Low Pretty huge range with decent quality, ships around the country. http://www.theiconic.com.au/
Topman Mall/Fast fashion Huge range, UK based and ships to Aus free. http://www.topman.com/
Uniqlo Mall/Fast fashion Cheap basics, the Australian store doesn't get nearly as many collabs and exciting stuff as in Japan http://www.uniqlo.com/au/
Universal Mall/Fast fashion Cheap deals, similar to General Pants http://www.universalstore.com/
Up There Medium Tons of streetwear, good selection of shoes and hats. http://www.uptherestore.com/
Vanishing Elephant Medium Mostly menswear, nice shirts. http://www.vanishingelephant.com/
Violent Green Medium Carries Saturdays Surf NYC as well as a heap of cool local and international brands http://www.violentgreen.com.au/
Windsor Smith Shit Low quality overpriced footwear, don’t even bother just go spend the same amount at somewhere else http://www.windsorsmith.com.au/his
Witchery Low Mostly business/prep clothing, has brogues and other #menswear accesories. Quality is not great especially with their footwear but sometimes worth it when on sale http://www.witchery.com.au/
YD. Shit Pretty low quality but useful if you are looking for small sizes. http://www.yd.com.au/
Zanerobe Mall/Fast fashion Average quality. Basic. http://www.zanerobe.com/
Zekka Artisanal/Luxury (Perth) Dark high fashun shit. The works. m.a.+, InAisce, Devoa, Julius, LUC, Ann D and so on. http://zekka.com/
ZOOLOGIE! Medium Interesting streetwear pieces http://www.zoologie.com.au/

At seventeen, June Hardie is everything a young woman in 1951 shouldn't be--independent, rebellious, a dreamer. June longs to travel, to attend college and to write the dark science fiction stories that consume her waking hours. But her parents only care about making June a better young woman. Her mother grooms her to be a perfect little homemaker while her father pushes her to marry his business partner's domineering son. When June resists, her whole world is shattered--suburbia isn't the only prison for different women.
June's parents commit her to Burrow Place Asylum, aka the Institution. With its sickening conditions, terrifying staff and brutal "medical treatments," the Institution preys on June's darkest secrets and deepest fears. And she's not alone. The Institution terrorizes June's fragile roommate, Eleanor, and the other women locked away within its crumbling walls. Those who dare speak up disappear...or worse. Trapped between a gruesome reality and increasingly sinister hallucinations, June isn't sure where her nightmares end and real life begins. But she does know one thing: in order to survive, she must destroy the Institution before it finally claims them all.
