What about the Future? -The disappearance of jetsetradio.live and the future of online pirate radio-

It's been about 4 days since jetsetradio.live was mysteriously taken down and hopefully I'm not jumping the gun in assuming that it may be gone for good, or at least for the time being, given what has been happening recently.
Like many others, I happened to stumble upon this site only a couple of months ago and instantly fell in love with it. It was like a dream I never knew I had: having a real life Jet Set Radio. The only game I had was JSRF back when I was like 10 and was still too young to really appreciate it the way I do now, but the site made me went to reconnect with the games again. I'm sure people have stories similar to mine, which only makes it clear to see how much of an impact JSRL had on the community. While there will still be fans for the games, with the site gone it now feels like there's a hole. Because of this I thought it was important to look back on the history of having a "real life" Jet Set Radio and the possible of a successor in the future. Keep in mind that I'm not really a veteran to the community or fandom, so if you have any other corrections or extra information feel free to comment.

jetsetrad.io

The first attempt of making a real life radio (afaik) was back around March of 2013 in the form of jetsetrad.io. It started out more as a blog dedicated to finding JSR related songs, but later allowed for songs to be streamed off the site. The "About" section says this:

Jet Set Radio?
Jet Set Radio Future and Jet Grind Radio are games which are known for their unique soundtrack. Unfortunately, due to the non-genre-specific nature of the music, people are often disappointed when they go to get more music like the songs they loved from the games – and simply cannot find it.
jetsetrad.io is all about giving the fans of the games’ soundtracks an opportunity to discover and listen to music which is similar to that of the Jet Set Radio pirate radio station in the games.
There's not much I could find about the guy who started it other then he was a fan of the series and that he went by the moniker "DJ Professor K". The site posted songs from both games and users would send over recommendations that would later be highlighted and added to the list. The last post was September 2015 and the site didn't go offline until sometime around May 2017.
(P.S. I eventually did find what I believe is the guy who first started jetsetrad.io. I'm not going to mention him by name since it looks like he has since moved on with other things in life and I don't want people to be bugging him about a website he made 7 years ago. If I had to guess I don't think he is the one behind the new jetsetrad.io, but who knows).

jetsetradio.live

According to Professor K himself, the story goes as follows:
"... One night in 2016, I was in a deep sleep. You know that movie Wayne's World 2? In my dream, a musical cherub with colored wings came to me and said "If you build it they will come... save the future." So... as soon as I woke up I put together a demo of what it could be like. I have some hobby knowledge of HTML5 and the first version of the website just played the soundtracks with different backgrounds flashing. You couldn't skip. There were no stations. No ticker. No chat. No wall (Source: videogamer.com)".
"Jet Set Radio Live started in January of 2016 when I woke up from a dream... in fact, you could argue I didn't start Jet Set Radio Live. It started itself. I just had the skills to whip up an idea of what it would look like in the modern world (Source: The DJ Behind The Real Jet Set Radio)"
Jetsetradio.live officially started on January 25th, 2016. As mentioned above, it was a pretty basic site with the only notable feature being a chatroom. You can find a rundown of how the early site looked in this video. It was not made by the same "Professor K" as the first site, however it did incorporate the song list that the first site made as a foundation and would later pass the torch as users began to migrate over. The site continued to be slowly updated until it eventually reached a stable.

What happened to Professor K?

Shortly after the site was made, a Twitter account was made under the handle @jetsetradiolive where the site owner continued his roleplay as "DJ Professor K". I wasn't a long time follower, but if you scroll through his earlier post you can see him retweeting any things relating to Jet Set Radio, obsessing over adult model Hitomi Tanaka, calling out SEGA about not making a sequel for JSR, and poking fun with series composer Hideki Naganuma, all while staying in character. I don't know if there was any drama in the past, but I believe the reason for his disappearance began when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. With the series of riots, political contention, and overall uncertainty about the future, naturally Professor K wasn't going to sit back and watch what he thinks could be the "Rokkaku" starting to take over. Maybe it was all an act, maybe he actually believed what he said, maybe he thought he could be some sort of activist and actually start a revolution, or maybe his own personal frustrations were leaking out. Whatever the reason is it's unclear and I'll leave it up to you to decide. The only thing that is clear is that things started to go downhill as the year went on.
On December 28th, 2020 Professor K sent out what seems to be a final message in his usual cryptic fashion. It's unclear what exactly caused this to happen, though in the days that followed he started to get into more arguments with people as more people began to call him out about some of the things he was retweeting and spreading. He could have did it out of spite or it's entirely possible that he was already thinking about leaving months ago, in any case it's all just speculation. Two weeks later on January 11th, 2021, the site displayed "404 Page Not Found" with Professor K still being silent.

What about the Future?

As of now, the site is still technically online. From what I can see the page is actually giving a fake error page however the page's source doesn't explain much either other than it's purposely redirecting to "google.com". You may be thinking that it would still be possible to access other files linked to the site, but it looks like those files may have been removed since they instead show a different "404 error" (ex. https://jetsetradio.live/radio/stations/classic/B.B.%20Rights%20-%20Funky%20Radio.mp3). The only link I've found that still work this one: https://jetsetradio.live/faq.txt. Also from what I could find, the site domain doesn't expire until 1/25/2021, which could mean if nothing is done until then the site could be gone for good.
As of now there doesn't seem to be any alternatives for jetsetradio.live, the only possible hope seems to be jetsetrad.io however nobody knows who is the one behind the site and if it will even come out. The only real clue I could find is that it was registered on 9/24/2020. One theory I could think of is that maybe it's actually JSRL's Professor K behind it given how much he talks about the FUTURE and how similar the site looks to JSRF's loading screen. Although I was only able find two mentions of him talking about jetsetrad.io and one being a comment from over 4 years ago and the other was a brief tweet about the site going down. It also could be possible that it's some completely random guy who only bought the domain as a joke much like lucar.io.
Back in August, I began to reflect on Professor K's words: "SAVE THE FUTURE". I don't really know what he meant by this, maybe it was just a nonsensical phrase that sounded cool, but I did began to think of what future I was trying to save. I really liked JSRL and how impressive each playlist was, so if there was a future that I wanted to save it would have been JSRL's, which is why I began to download each song. I've mentioned this before, but just in case I'll link it here again: https://archive.org/details/JSRL-station-08312020. In all honesty I wasn't expecting this to be needed so soon.
I've also started collecting whatever material I could find for JSRL over on GitHub:
Right now I have tons of wallpaper I saved from both his Twitter and whatever was saved to the Wayback Machine. Anyone is welcome to help contribute, make suggestions, or rehost what I have somewhere else. In terms of what couldn't be saved, it looks like the chat history is completely lost given how each message is saved and overwritten onto a single xml file, so the only way for it to be truly archived someone would have had to been constantly saving that page since the site started. Another thing that may be lost for good is the videos from JSRL TV. I was able to find the file link for each video earlier last month, however when I entered it all into my download manager it said the total dump would have been 70GB and I didn't have that much space to spare on my hard drive. In hindsight I should have just done one channel at a time and deleted the files after I uploaded them, but it's too late now. I did find his YouTube channel which had some of the bumps and I already downloaded them.

The next Professor K?

While he may not have been the official voice of the community, he did make a noticeable impact because of JSRL regardless of his shortcomings. Will he come back? Will someone become the next Professor K? Who knows. Worst case we end up with a situation of several people claiming to be the real Professor K. Either way, even if you just wanted to just host the radio and not necessarily be the next "Professor K" there's still some hurdles to overcome:
Hopefully with the files I and others were able to save we should at least have somewhat a starting ground to work with in rebuilding "Jet Set Radio Live" if needed.
Even though people may disagree about his behavior and character, I do have to applaud his dedication and love for Jet Set Radio by the fact he kept the site up for almost 5 years. In retrospect, maybe in some way Professor K really did failed to achieve his goal of "saving the future". Within the past 5 years of his time online, SEGA has still fail to re-release JSRF and Microsoft still hasn't added backwards compatibility support for JSRF despite knowing the Xbox One and Series X|S would greatly help the performance issues seen when playing it on the 360. The only real glimmer of hope we've had lately has been "Bomb Rush Cyberfunk" which isn't even made by SEGA but by fans inspired by JSR, and the slim possibility of something happening for JSRF's 20th anniversary in 2022.

Am I mad that things had to end this way? Of course, but complaining isn't going to help, what's done is done. All we can do now is look to the future and hopefully shape it into something better.
Update (1/25/2021): It looks like his Twitter has had more activity since the last I checked it. No new post yet, however he has been retweeting people's reactions about the site's "404" and disappearance. Is this just a bot or is this becoming more of a publicity stunt??? I guess we'll have to stay tuned and see what what the future holds.
Update #2 (1/27/2021): Is the Future coming sooner then we expected? I guess we'll find out come next month! https://twitter.com/jetsetradiolive/status/1354497386643648523?s=20

More PS5 info on Back-compat, forced vibration/adaptive triggers leaked via PlayStation store web source code

Web page source code at https://checkout.playstation.com/error# contains interesting new PS5 info
It seems this is info will be presented on the Web-based PlayStation Store through prompts/error messages.
-Backwards Compatibility:
So, not all PS4 games will be supported, and indeed, as suggested a few months back, you'll need to update the system OS to access newly compatible PS4 games.
We already knew boost mode was coming, but interesting to see Sony is sticking with that naming convention.

-Forced vibration/adaptive triggers:
Seems that developers are allowed to force haptic feedback/trigger control. Potential accessibility issue?

-Console sharing
Ignoring the specific PS Now bit, this suggests that PS5 will bring forward PS4's "Primary" account model in some form, where a PSN account can be designated "primary" and other users can access it's purchases and subscription content from the same console.
EDIT: Looks like "primary" is being renamed to "Main" PS5, as the Demon's Souls product page states: "You can download and play this content on the main PS5 console associated with your account (through the “Console Sharing and Offline Play” setting) and on any other PS5 consoles when you login with your same account." (https://www.playstation.com/en-us/games/demons-souls/#sku)

-Cross-Gen party chat:
Unclear whether this is system-level or only certain games. I would assume system level.

-Cloud saves, remote game downloads (obvious, but confirmed):

[Build Help] 35k desktop build help or any good laptop for 45k?

What will you be doing with this PC? -
Regular usage and light gaming. not planning to play every AAA game in ultra.
What is your maximum budget?
35k for desktop build or 45k for laptop if there is one that fulfills requirement
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? -
This week
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget?
Need Motherboard, RAM, SSD, CPU, PSU. I have 2tb 5400 RMP HDD and Case ( Cooler Master K380 Mid Tower ) and GPU MSI GTX 960 2GB.
Should i reuse the case or buy new one? can't Decide. :(
Which state/city will you be purchasing the parts in? State your preference for online or offline.
Offline. Vadodara , Gujarat. (let me know if you have any good shop suggestions).
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Going to reuse monitor , speaker , keyboard , mouse , UPS.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU
No overclocking but need backward and forward compatibility for GPU. not much knowledgeable about it. going to keep current 960 and 1-2 years down the line i will add new GPU. ( will be equivalent xx60 of that generation. not going to go above that )
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
For Desktop :
For Laptop :
Optioal for laptop:
Both Laptop and desktop should survive the next 7-8 years. current setup of i3 3210 served me well for the last 6-7 years until lockdown started. it started to have problems after that and has been in constant repair shop and back and repair shop and back cycle now for past 5 month. Im not asking that new build or laptop should be futureproof or should play game at same level. i just need them to last like the i3 build. even without ssd it handled everyday task like champ and didnt break down on hardware level up until lockdown.
So the new build / laptop should have stability where i dont have to tinker with it once in a while or go in BIOS etc... and it should be built to last.
Do you have any specific case preferences? - (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colours, window or not, LED lighting, etc or a particular colour theme preference for the components)
*I dont want LED or RGB etc. Indifferent about windows. Not much interested in aesthetics. should have good airflow , midtower or smaller, should not stick out like a sore thumb. current case is black and I like that. light colors get easily dirty. * Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? - If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
No need for Windows license

State of the Game - September 16th, 2020

State of the Game

This State of the Game focused mostly on Title Update 11 launch.

Priority Alerts

Maintenance - September 15th, 2020

» Source

Free Weekend

There will be a free weekend from September 24th to the 27th.
The progress from the free weekend will carry over when you buy the game.

Summary

Ubisoft Forward

=> TU 11 / The Summit Trailer

Console Cross Gen Compatibility

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 will be backward compatible on both the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5, allowing you to play The Division 2 on the new generation of consoles.
In essence, the game will work on the new console generation.

If you own the Division 2 on PS4 for example, you don’t have to buy it again to play it on PS5. It will work and you can continue your journey with your character. You will also be able to play with your friends on PS4 while playing on PS5 (for example) but only within the same console family. (same applies to Xbox)
Regarding quality – this is not an optimization pass to upgrade the graphics – but The Division will run on the highest possible quality of the current console generation. So if you buy a PS5, you get the PS4 Pro quality – the same applies to Xbox.

The Division 1 has the same compatibility.

Title Update 11

Release Date: September 22nd (during the usual maintenance)

The Summit

Will be released with TU11 on September 22nd.

PTS Phase 2 Changes:
These changes were introduced in Phase 2 of the PTS:
  • Added greater variety and diversity in objective types as you progress through The Summit.
  • Changed the Hostage revive timer to be longer, giving more leeway to reach them before the objective fails.
  • Increased the radius of the hack zone for EMP objectives.
  • Increased the number of loot caches scattered around the building, which contents scale with difficulty.
  • Reduced number of directives on Legendary Floors 91-100. Now has 3 random directives (previously had 4).
  • Fixed an issue which allowed players to finish the 100th floor without actually killing the enemies.
  • Fixed an issue causing only one type of enemy to spawn on Legendary difficulty.
  • Fixed an issue causing enemies to shoot through walls on the 100th floor.

Additional changes for TU11 launch
  • Added more objectives do complete and changed the frequency of certain objectives.
  • Drone Ambush objective was adjusted
  • Legendary Floors have now Rogue Agents encounter enabled (they will also happen in any other difficulty)
    • You will also have a checkpoint, so even if you die to the Rogue Agents on legendary difficulty, you will not lose any progress.
    • This applies only to the Summit, legendary Strongholds have no Rogue Agent encounters
  • Legendary Floors also have exotic Archetypes enabled, so you can have (for example) all 3 Warhound Archetypes in one encounter.
  • Legendary Floors – Ambush objective has been disabled because the factions that are assigned to that objective are not scaled to legendary (Rioters, Ambushers, etc)
  • Covers were fixed that were not working properly
  • Laptop interactions placement were fixed
  • Doors not opening was fixed
  • Floor 100 enemies appearing beneath the floor was fixed
  • Rally Points up to Level 50 will be unlocked per default at TU11 launch.
  • The Directives will stay pre-set as on PTS, if you don’t like Directives, you can repeat the floors that have not any Directives assigned to them. (they are looking into changes for that in TU11.1)

Checkpoints
If you join a group that has a higher Rally Point than you (you have unlocked 40 and you join a group on 65, you will keep the Rally Point on 70 once you have killed the boss encounter there)

Planned changes for TU11.1
They are looking into difficulty, Directives, Targeted Loot, and other optimizations for a more customized challenge that fits you.

Please keep the feedback coming.

Operation Iron Horse Discovery Mode

The Discovery Mode for the Operation Iron Horse Raid will become available when Title Update 11 drops.

Gear Mod Changes

  • All Gear Mod Slots will become generic, so you can put any red/yellow/blue mods into any slot you want.
  • The announced resistance mod changes (double the value) have been reverted and will not go live because it had unwanted impacts on the meta.

Recalibration Library

The pistol recalibration bug will be fixed with TU11.

New Directives

  • Two new Directives will be added into the mix – no details have been given.
  • Two old ones will be replaced.

Global Event Modifier Changes

They went through the Global Events (Reanimated, Guardian, and Polarity Switch) and they made some drastic changes in how they work.
In essence, they’ve taken away many of the negative aspects and kept the positive effects of those modifiers to make sure you actually want to have them active because they make you feel more powerful.

PVP Changes

The PVP balancing changes are listed in the PTS patch notes: Link
No additional PVP content will be added with TU11.

Season 3

The title of Season 3 will be "Concealed Agenda".
The Season will start immediately with the launch of TU11.
The Prime Target will be the Black Tusk Leader Bardon Schaeffer.
=> Image

The Skill to unlock will be the Shrapnel Trap.

Season 3 will continue the story that you have been experiencing in Division 2 and you will go after Bardon Schaeffer, the last leader of the Black Tusk Special Unit (BTSU). During the Campaign, you took down the other BTSU leaders one by one - like Wyvern in Tidal Basin for example – and Schaeffer is the last man standing. So now you have the chance to really hit the Black Tusk hard and take down their leadership.

Season 4 will follow after that and there you will encounter Faye Lau as the Primary Target: Roadmap

Twitch Drops
Twitch Drops will be active during the Season for the whole Division Directory
  • 3 Legacy Caches when you watch for 30 minutes
  • Milkshake Backpack Trophy

Codename: Nightmare

Achievement Questions

Hey everyone, I’ve coming seeking guidance on a few things. My favorite part of playing Xbox is earning achievements and unfortunately for me I’m leaving to go on a nine month deployment with no WiFi soon. I know I can’t earn achievements offline but I have a few questions I couldn’t find elsewhere about the system.
1) I know the “limit” for stored earned achievements is 50 (I think) does this mean when I get back to a connection that no matter what the achievements won’t unlock or will some pop when I start up each game up?
2) I remember in the 360 days you could earn achievements offline, so if I played 360 backwards compatible games on the One, would those unlock?
3) Is there any word on this system for the Series X? I would assume the same as the One but I haven’t seen any confirmation.
Thanks for the help everyone, I’d appreciate any input or guidance.

August 2020 Game of the Month - Mortal Kombat II

Congratulations to psykechan on beating Sonic the Hedgehog within that 24 hour window of posting last month's new gotm, to u/RetroPlayer68 on beating the Axelay challenge, to psykechan, u/RetroPlayer68, and u/Magasaki for beating the Moonwalker challenge, and especially again to u/RetroPlayer68 for beating both the Axelay challenge and the Moonwalker challenge. They were hard challenges, particularly for Axelay, congrats. If you have any ideas for what the flairs should be for them, comment below or I'll just do the name of the game. And as usual, everyone has another 24 hours to still complete one of those challenges and get a flair.
Last month I posted a poll asking if people would rather the gotm be crossposted from emulation or /RetroGameoftheMonth and a plurality of people voted for /emulation so from now on I will cross-post from there
Back in April for the Street Fighter III: Double Impact gotm, u/Maxane9000 ran a tournament on the discord for the game and it was a success. This month we're doing another fighting game and u/toraotwo will be running a tournament for the Genesis version using fightcade2 on August 31 9pm CEST/7pm UTC. If you're interested, join the Discord where there will be more information, a link to sign up, etc

Mortal Kombat II

  • Developer(s): Midway
  • Publisher(s): Midway
  • Platform(s): Arcade, 32X, SNES, Sega Genesis
FATALITY. BRUTALITY, ANIMALITY. BABALITY. FRIENDSHIP. These were the early finishing moves that marked the Mortal Kombat series and the childhood of many players (specially the fatality) with a dark voice (the announcer, who is actually a boss character) saying the winner and the finishing move type. The fighting series was pretty balanced on the early iterations, with the only real differences between fights being the special moves, with the exception of some of the special characters. The finishing moves were only used as a stylish way to finish off already won fights, but was not necessary as the person had already won anyway. You could also, in certain stages, do a stage fatality if you can't do a personal or exclusive fatality. As most finishing moves were bloody for the consoles standards, the game rapidly gained popularity by its violent but comical, surreal and innovative content.

Emulation Information:
Use Fightcade 2 on PC to play the Genesis version with multiplayer or use MAME on PC or Android to play the Arcade original.
Don't buy the Arcade Collection on PC because it uses Games for Windows Live for multiplayer. It'll let you play offline with a regular account, but I couldn't get the online multiplayer working at all despite trips to PCGamingWiki. Arcade Kollection on PS3/360 are good, buy one of those if you want official arcade emulation and have the appropriate system. Note that the 360 version is not a backwards compatible title on Xbox One.

Switching from XBox to PS

So here i am with giving up on XBOX after them delaying Halo release and also no word on “futuristic” VR add-on. Back in June I was still struggling to see the pros and cons of sticking with Xbox. Pros were that I was used to the joystick positions (ever since I started playing Dreamcast, that layout has been engraved for my finger reflexes), Halo was coming back with offline multiplayer features, and it was fully backwards compatible. Hardware wasn’t awful and some might say coz it has more TF than PS5, it might be a more powerful machine. Cons at that point was, it was basically just a small upgrade from previous system. There really wasn’t anything that was unique. There weren’t that many exclusive games and also you can play most games on PC now (including new Halo when it comes out).
After adding more cons than pros, I made the decision to give up on Xbox and switch to PS5. Then shit went crazy yesterday 😂 and now I’m thinking how can a manufacturer make so less stock available for pre orders when the demand was already going to be so high? Plus add the COVID situation and more people are looking for online sales rather than going in store at launch day.
More stock might be available later, or not, who knows. All I know is that there were way too many people who weren’t able to pre-order than those were. Comparing to iPhone pre order launches, the way they handle it is so much more organized it seems. They would still allow you to pre-order but push out the delivery date based on availability. But a lot of gamers here are just struggling between added to cart and then can’t check out.
Just venting coz I was so excited to make the switch, and play for the first time PS.

PS5 Digital-only vs Environmental cost of games being sold on discs.

Edit: this went as badly as i expected it to, still can't have any discussions on reddit about the environment and consumerism without people getting touchy, christ. thanks for the few sensible comments though! don't worry, if i wanted karma from this sub i would just photoshop another ps5 colour scheme ;)
i'll leave this post and my comments up even tho i'm being brigaded by people that didn't bother to read the post lol enjoy
Hi guys,
I made a comment in this post that was started a couple days ago, because after reading through the comments i saw no mention of this topic.
As the thread was already a day old when i posted my comment, it didn't generate any discussion, so i'm making this fresh post for that purpose.
Below is my original comment in that thread, bulked out with tonnes more info and sources, with some follow up underneath:
Manufacturing hundreds of millions of discs, and more importantly, the hundreds of millions of plastic cases that go with them (over the course of a generation of consoles) is ethically wrong - especially considering the absolutely minimal benefits to the end user.
Based on the design of the console with the disc drive added on, it looks almost like a last-minute decision to include it (imo.) It may look awkwardly slapped on purely because the drive had to sit there, to ensure the internal components have enough space for cooling, but we may never know for sure.
I feel like Sony were going to be bold and go disc-less this gen, but chickened out at the last minute - either because of pressure from publishers and manufacturers, or based on polling/sales data, or merely the fact that Xbox have a disc drive option up for grabs this time, etc.
I am for going discless 100%. I haven't seen anyone talk about the environmental aspect of manufacturing discs. Those plastic cases that literally only hold the disc and a couple of leaflets are utterly wasteful, considering the fact that a disc right now is purely an authenticator for owning the game, and you have to download and install it digitally, along with all patches and updates regardless...
The millions upon millions of discs and their cases, produced for practically every non-indie game release, are completely non-biodegradable and only semi-recyclable even in the best case (ha ha) scenario (more on that in a bit though...)
I definitely understand the perceived benefit to the consumer if they are likely to trade in and share games with others, but I feel like that is something that Sony/MS/Nintendo/publishers need to work on - improving the concept of digital downloads, rather than sticking to discs. Making digital ownership as flexible as physical ownership should be the priority. I reckon Sony were going to attempt this, but possibly were afraid of the backlash and decided not to go for it, especially if they discovered during development that Xbox was going to keep the disc drive. They also could have been lobbied by the publishers and by proxy the disc manufacturers, but that's all just guesswork at this point.
This was the gen to do it, imo. Next gen is too late - the environment is critical. The oceans are full of plastic, and entire ecosystems are collapsing, with many already gone. You have no doubt already heard of microplastics contamination in the fish we eat.
A whole 7-10 years more (an estimate to the next 'generation' of consoles/gaming tech) of up to tens of millions of wasteful plastic cases, per (Jim Sterling voice): 'triple-AAAAAA' game, that ultimately end up in the sea - not good at all.
For reference, in 2018, The top 20 games alone sold just over 10,305,000 physical disc units. (i've linked sources for almost everything at the bottom of this post and throughout.) Using an average weight of the plastic casing that contains a ps4 or ps3 game (180g - 200g) that equates to 412,200,000kg of plastic, or 412,200 tonnes.
That's from only the top 20 games, in one year. The biggest games like Fifa and Call of Duty tend to sell up to 10m copies alone in their lifespan, although physical game sales are in a downward trend across all platforms and games. The problem is, a downward trend isn't enough.
If you live in the USA, or the UK, or Australia or mainland Europe, and so on, your plastic still ends up in the ocean. Chinese and Indian companies were often the last part of the 'recycling' chain that 1st world countries outsource to - I can only definitively speak for the UK and USA as i know the facts, but from discussions with German and Aussie mates it sounds pretty much the same there too. Recycling giants in our countries simply collect and ship waste to China and India, or more recently, SE Asian countries such as Indonesia and Thailand for them to 'correctly dispose of' - in a process that is badly audited on purpose, to absolve blame. Your recycling, notably plastic as it is expensive to sort and re-use, goes through the chain in your home country and ticks all the boxes to say "we've done our bit and this waste is being recycled", and then it sails to the developing world for it to be promptly dumped in the seas. Considering the thousands of tonnes of plastic waste produced by video games, it is a significant chunk of this harmful practice and should be in everyone's conscious mind. To give an idea of the scale of the problem, in 2016, China received 7 million tonnes of plastic from around the world. This figure generally increases year on year.
The plastic used in video game and dvd/bluray cases is very difficult to recycle, and the shrink wrap is 100% non-recyclable. The cost of recycling this stuff is so high that a country like China would much prefer to throw it all in the seas. SE Asian countries like Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand are far poorer and far less equipped to deal with this plastic waste - so now, even more of it is going in the ocean. Even before China’s ban, only 9% of discarded plastic was being recycled, while 12% was burned.
The blame for this practice does not sit solely on the shoulders of those poor countries - the supposed '1st world' countries, knowingly shifting the responsibility onto them in order to wash their hands of it, deserve more scrutiny. It is the '1st world' countries that should be leading the charge in recycling technology or, to make a much bigger difference, figuring out how to prevent the plastics and other waste being created in the first place.
Small tech companies and entrepeneurs are looking into small scale solutions, and some games industry players are thinking about this - but realistically this sort of stuff is like putting a plaster on a severed artery. For example. I don't mean to knock these ideas, especially as they would indeed help if we insist on producing physical copies of games, but it's still nothing compared to the difference going fully digital would make.
I understand the benefit to those of you who like to buy lots of games and trade them back in to recoup some of the cost, or swap discs with friends often. But that is where the benefits end, and they don't make a dent in the overwhelming negative effects of manufacturing them in an age where it is 100% unnecessary.
Another argument might be that those with bad or no internet rely on discs. Well, you still need an internet connection to install the games and their patches, you need an internet connection to verify the purchase, and you need a decent internet connection to play online and utilise half of the features of most games nowadays. Even the single player ones, what with DLC and other updates. This isn't me saying "it's 2020, if you don't have good internet, that's on you" - i'm more or less saying that this is where gaming has gone and where it will undoubtedly stay. Those of us that like playing the old school, offline consoles will always have them, but keeping up with new advances means we all have to be online with capable internet. So I personally don't see this is a valid argument, I think new games shouldn't have the obligation to be produced on outdated formats.
To summarise, I am basically disappointed that this generation of consoles will continue to support discs and other physical media formats (Nintendo's physical game cases are even worse really, considering the size of the cartridges, and this has been a serious problem of theirs for a long time across many generations of their consoles.)
I think if Sony took the bold step to exclude disc drives this time, and simply made one of the requirements for developing a game for PS5 that e.g. 'whoever publishes the game can not consider physical formats as the console will be digital media only' it would have been incredibly easy to accomodate and would have been a benefit for everyone, in the short term and long term. Of course, I want MS/Nintendo and all the non-gaming publishers that still produce DVDs / BluRays and CD-ROMs to follow suit, but i was quietly hoping that Sony might have led the way this time. In the age of high speed broadband/fibre optic/high speed exchanges, multimedia streaming, backwards compatibility via emulation, streaming games from cloud servers etc, hanging on to disc drives feels like a cop-out.

If you read all this, thank you, and if you want to join in, please comment whether you agree with my outlook or not. I think the discussion needs to be had and personally I want to do whatever I can to persuade video game publishers to ditch physical formats this generation, regardless of the fact the PS5 has got a disc drive version. Would be good to work out the best way to do that.

[Virus Game] Call for testers of my browser incremental, inspired by Pandemic & Kittens.

Note*: if you played the version from my Mind Dump Monday* comment a few weeks ago - you will need to clear local storage or go incognito for it to work (or even show up at all probably). There's been a huge overhaul since then and it's not backwards compatible, sorry!
Background:
This started as a personal exercise 5+ years ago, to see if I could learn what was under the hood of two of my favorite web-games Pandemic and Cookie Clicker (yes, I mixed up Pandemic and Plague Inc in my comment the other week and remembered thanks to oislal's comment). Since starting, I fell hard for Kittens Game and thought its basic mechanic structure would make a better pairing with Pandemic's theme than Cookie Clicker - especially with how much Kittens Game evolves from the first few clicks onward.
I recently picked this project backup about a month or two ago and now need some help testing it out...
Testing help that I'm looking for:
Finally, I haven't programmed any end-game yet. While in theory you should be able to eliminate humanity entirely - don't get your hopes up for some kind of reward or "Yay you won!" pop-up. Some achievements will be added soon.
Link to play again in case you missed it at the top (desktop browsers)
Thanks!
EDIT: I've decided to hit the pause button on developing this and will be taking the game offline for now. Thanks to everyone who has provided feedback and helped get it this far.

Black Desert should get upgrade on PS5. Also any Crimson Desert news?

I think the game will be backward compatible with PS5, though perhaps there will be a performance upgrade so it runs smoother. Also they should add option to walk on console that can be set to any button. the faster people move, the more it affects performance. though overall Black Desert is my favorite mmorpg, followed by FFXIV then FFXI then TERA. PS4 has a huge community and the psn communities are more active than ever! :)
also do you think Crimson Desert will be PS4 or PS5? some think it will be PS4 and PS5 besides PC. though not sure about it, the solo campaign sounds like it lacks character creation, which would suck. full unrestricted character creation is essential. not sure how they would design the classes and stuff for Crimson Desert, but I feel mmorpgs should evolve and provide playability offline besides online, with character creation featured in both modes, and offline created characters cannot be used online, and vice versa. that would prevent cheating, and online saved characters would prevent hacks, so security would be easy to do since offline characters would not be allowed and the online would only accept registered characters that are created and saved online.
if mmorpgs start being both offline and online playable (like PSO was on dreamcast, sure that is not a mmorpg but it still was an online focused game that still allowed people to play it online and the game was designed so its balanced for offline solo play too) , they would get more customers. and offline mode can supply a.i. mercenaries to recruit, so that would balance things out too.
though on the subject of Black Desert, I wouldn't purchase a PS5 unless Black Desert is playable on it, is upgraded so it runs on par with PC version, and Crimson Desert releases on it and proves to be a worthy successor to Black Desert, otherwise I'll just play Black Desert on ps4 cause my PC can barely run MUGEN. so I think they should be sure to raise the standards for mmorpg and overall evolve things so mmorpg aren't just for online gamers. there are microtransactions customers that would jump in if they could play the game offline also. just like how even games like TES have DLCs and people buy them and they play games like that cause the game isn't dependent on online, so the game has more value. and a game with both offline and online access, makes it even greater.

Fallout 5 has started early planning and prototyping. Don’t expect it for at least 3 years
New Vegas will be getting an HD remaster on all platforms, including switch, as a sort of apology to Fallout fans after the 76 disaster. It’ll include all the DLC.
Eternal was delayed mainly to fix the multiplayer which has been very buggy and laggy. They do not want a repeat of the 76 launch and are making sure the online features and multiplayer works as best it can. The Switch port is planned for the Fall.

Google doesn’t seem to be ending support of the project for at least 2 years but after that the future of stadia is uncertain
They have noted the ads are cringe inducing and are bad, and plan to try a new strategy for them
New color scheme for the controller is coming: Silver and Gold

Netherrealm:
-Injustice 3 is going to be the first next gen title from them
MK11 Port to PS5 and Series X
Marvel Vs DC is being floated around with Marvel but it likely won’t happen
Future MK11 DLC includes Goro, Doomslayer, and Ed Boon himself as a free joke character

Edit: Updated format because of complaints. To emphasis: I just got this from a pastebin leak, format and all. There is a lot that is questionable but I shared it here because it was an interesting read.

PS3 YLOD fix after reball, reliable PS3 phat help.

Not sure if this belongs here or regular PS3 so let me know and I can move.
I purchased a PS3 CECHB01 that was reballed. Used it moderately, then YLOD. ebay seller warranty already expired. I also own a PS3 Super slim ( works perfect) and PS3 CECHA01 that was also reballed from ebay. The CECHA01 is definitely on its last leg as PS3 games frequently cause the PS3 to restart.
At this point, I've decided that I will use my PS3 super slim unhacked and for ps3 games only. I'd like to hack the Phat ps3, and use it to play PS2 and PSone games to a 2TB HDD and keep it offline.
With that in mind, would taking apart the ylod ps3 CECHB01, delid, replacing thermals, fan, PSU etc cause to it to come back to life? Should I maybe do this to the current PS3 CECHA01 before it dies?
Should I get the CECHB01 re-reballed or fixed?
I feel comfortable deliding, however, how are people getting the the RSX and CPU to stick back on? Could someone link me to the adhesive. All the videos show only how to delid.
I already have a PS2, but want a PS3 for HDMI as my TV does not have a component input and I like the all in one solution.
As you can tell, I have a love/hate relationship with this system. I like old PS1 and PS2 games, and like the all in one convenience of the phat, but the PS3 phats unreliability is frustrating.
Basically, I'm looking for recommendations on how to get a working backwards compatible PS3 and ensure long term reliability.
Looking for suggestions on how I can achieve this.

Do you think that backward compatibility of Nintendo consoles will change in the future?

I am curious how Nintendo will handle the backward compatibility of future consoles. This was difficult in the past because of limitations and developments you had with the cartridges or discs. You couldn't expect to have the same cartridge format on every new console. This has changed with more and more digital purchases. Nintendo can't argue with that anymore. What do you think? Will the Nintendo eShop allow you to play your old digitally purchased games on a new generation or do you need to pay again? Do you think it will be the same like with the Wii Shop Channel? The Nintendo eShop goes offline and will be replaced with another store?

Halo Infinite - The last mainline Halo "game."

Apologies for the attention grabbing title because it may come across as hyperbolic.
So a thought came to me today about the nature of the videogame industry and how things are trending into the future. I was also thinking about Halo as a series and what is in store as well as the new slipspace engine itself.
Now I understand that a lot of down-voting may come from this post but I thought it might be interesting to have a thought experiment based on these kinds of industry trends (for better or worse) and open that discussion up to the Halo Community.

What if Halo Infinite is the beginning of Halo as a live service and not just a game. Backwards compatible down to the original Xbox one and expanded upon regularly and playable across every xbox generation from this point on... Infinitely.
As a launch title and a fundamental component of Gamepass (and the idea of all xbox exclusives being put on the Gamepass service) it makes sense that microsoft isnt looking for first day sales. They're looking for subscribers and engagement in that gamepass ecosystem.
Making Halo infinite a live service game like destiny, apex legends or rainbow six seige will ultimately refocus the community on a single service, encourage regular engagement and a higher install base (due to a significantly lowered barrier to entry) then traditional sales.
Instead of making it directly free like Apex or Destiny, it is a launch title for Xbox Series X and S that you can play immediately using your free included 7 day Gamepass ultimate pass (and later included in a very well priced subscription).
Let me try to expand upon this in a few key areas as to what I think they might try to do.
SLIPSPACE ENGINE
I think one of the limitations that Halo had with its engine in the past is that it was design iteratively with a lot of legacy code. This has previously been addressed before (in practically every games vidocs) but this legacy code also does not work well with rapid small changes and updates that a game presented as a live service could be.
Building a next gen engine like Slipspace from scratch gives 343 much greater agency for designing a game in terms of a live service model. Designing it with functionality that allows significant engine improvements to be installed via patches over time and for adaptability (different genres such as FPS and RTS could theoretically use the same engine with appropriate tools to allow you to build in either)
This means new content can be rapidly deployed, developed quickly and fixed immediatly when needed.
EXAMPLE: Destiny 1 actually uses a different engine to Destiny 2. They look similar but Destiny 2s back end allows for a large amount of expansion and socketing for new features (such as the armour 2.0 update for instance) something that was not possible for Destiny 1. I would not be surprised if something like this is already included into the slipspace engine.
Scalability is another thing. This engine will have to work at a variety of specification levels for all Gamepass owners on xbox one, series s and X as well as PC. You will have to design your game around player engagement in order to maintain those ongoing costs with later generations and newer pc hardware. This absolutely is not possible with the original engine and is a significant contribution to the Master Chief Collections issues.
Imagine instead of the tools and feature set of 11 engines (as in MCC) every future campaign and multiplayer suit is made in slipspace engine, which is always constantly updated with new tech on every machine where Halo Infintite is installed
CAMPAIGN
No issues here, I wouldn't be surprised to get a campaign of decent quality and length. However consider the following as well;
Imagine expansions being directly installed into Halo Infinite (similarly to Halo Reach and Halo ODST in MCC but much more streamlined).
What about new full mainline Halo games that simply get added into Halo Infinite with and the accompanying slipspace engine update. That engine would still contain all the assets and building blocks to play Halo Infinites campaign perfectly in its original form. (A similar example to this might be Half Life: Source and Half life 2, same engine but Half Life: Source uses it's own assets)
With the likes of photogrammetry which is definitely present in the Slipspace engine it's not like certain items can graphically improve further then where they are currently as they're technically being rendered almost 1 to 1. IE the Asset Graphical detail isnt likely to get more realistic and there for a large Majority of Assets from Halo Infinite can be reused in the next campaigns anyways.
Different stories and gameplay getting updated every year in the same way as Destiny. Halo doesnt have to stick to just numbered entries that pull in large user numbers which slowly dwindle over time. These expansions could focus on minor characters and their personal journeys, they also dont need to be fixed in time either.
Each year there could be a new shorter expansion (similar to ODST) told in different ways and introducing new gameplay styles.
Maybe you play as Locke in an expansion and he retains Halo 5s movement mechanics and level design to reflect those mechanics in a traditional scripted level by level design set after Halo 5. Or maybe another expansion where you are a marine and you use a pelican to traverse in a single truly large open world map and the whole campaign is in that one massive space set in the book Contact Harvest? With a truly scalable and adaptable engine such as the slipspace engine could be these could be treated with the same level of development time as an actual game but using the latest technologies added to the slipspace engine that would already but updated to every console, cloud and PC using Halo Infinite.
Every 3 years or so do a massive campaign update (Leading Campaign shall we say) with MC as the focus which moves the timeline forward. (To beat a dead horse , as an example; think of Marvels Infinity Saga)
Imagine each campaign is selectable with in the same way as the Master Chief Collection, along with playlists, cross playlists, speed runs and scoring all becuase they use the same engine and similar asset sets.
When the campaign is treated as an ongoing service it can expand, change the scale of the conflict (up for galactic threat, down for personal stories), and introduce new heros without the fear of low sales numbers for a mainline halo title as engagement and content delivery will be at the focus of this.
MULTIPLAYER
Game modes are a constant source of contention. Halo 5 was notoriously absent of big team battle. People dont want a battle royale mode in halo. Warzone isnt as good as firefight etc.
For infinite you could propose 2 types of multiplayer Multiplayer - standard competitive and casual modes Multiplayer Expansion - larger more complex game modes
So what constitutes "Multiplayer Expansion"? Basically all of Halos more unique game modes that usually have their own menu option (such as warzone or firefight).
This means that new modes can be added later. What is to stop there being an entire content update for a battleroyale mode. Or maybe even a temporary game mode such as Rainbow 6 Sieges Quarentine gameplay. Or even an entire playlist dedicated to halo 5s movement mechanics and still keep normal playlists on rotation. Maybe a heroes mode where instead of playing your normal customised Spartan you play as Spartans or elites from the lore with their own unique abilities in entirely new maps.
343 could theoretically take the time to test and implement entire new game modes or bring back old ones like invasion, without having to entirely rebuild the multiplayer for each and every game.
Maps that have been found lacking on the first pass can have a flighting program to play test these new game modes and maps on test servers.
Imagine in 10 years time there might literally be a hundred of maps that get put in and put of rotation. Not to mention the oppertunities that this affords forge maps.
FORGE AND CUSTOMS
I think this is fairly self explanatory however Forge could be built up as more of an entire map editor which has every asset available. With new assets and functionality that is updated on Expansions, multiplayer maps or Leading Campaigns as it is all contained within the engine itself. Launching with a custom game browser at the start.
Weapons and Features that are brought into these expansions and "Leading Campaigns" can then be added into forge for placement in any map.
Imagine designing a map with rocket Launchers as the power weapons in the first year of Halo Infinite. 3 years later in a "Leading Campaign" and entirely new weapon that didnt exist in the halo cannon up until that point is integrated into the engine. You could theoretically go into forge and place down that new weapon into your old map and see how it plays out, giving older forge maps a new lease on life.
One set of forge tools that is constantly being expanded upon, tuned for efficiency or replaced entirely due to the ongoing technical improvements of the engine itself.
You can almost see this type of thing being done in Halo 5 where the Wasp was added to the game after Halo 5s initial release.
THEATRE
Again one set of tools, no need to replace them or rebuild them each game. Update them with the engines capabilities. Use the camera tools that are used in campaign and make it easy to share films between console, cloud and PC because it's all the same engine.
MONETIZATION
Urgh. I think this might be my least favourite topic but I get that it's obviously going to be featured at some point in a live service game so we might as well address it. I 100% understand the amount of flaming hatred that I might be about to endure.
I dont have any good ideas here but maybe instead of monetizing the cosmetics of the game they could paywall the expansions of the campaign and the multiplayer with a recurrent seasonal purchase.
Youd still get the leading campaigns for free as part of the service as well as standard multiplayer giving you what I determine to be Halo's core functions but the expansions; telling stories and gameplay from different points of view would be part of a paid upgrade. Same with multiplayer like Warzone or firefight. Nice for halo fans and doesnt impact on standard players.
Any weapons, features and maps that are included in those expansions could also be removed from forge use. Anyone without this expansion pass could still play and use those items in the standard multiplayer and when joining a custom game where the host has the expansion pass though.
Now that I've gone through that journey I feel like Halo as a service could technically work within the bounds of what we know is capable in the industry and Halo as a product is in it's current form. I come from an older era of gaming though were I like my games offline on a disc and as a product I entirely own and wished it to stay that way.
TL:DR - Due to sheer information drought, I thought it might be interesting to discuss Halo Infinite in terms of a live service model and how that might look like.

Actual Fighting Game Post. Single Player Content

About a week ago I asked here for fighting games with great single player modes. I don't want to keep up with new games anymore so I was looking for the best way I can play solo. This is not for current games still being produced like Tekken 7/SFV. I learned a lot of things not mentioned so here you go if you ever want to make a single player only collection, here you go.
Street Fighter 4
-Has different endings for characters than the other iterations. -Only version with a collectors edition, comes with DVD. -Different opening song/character select screen.
Super Street Fighter 4
-Ono himself said "I have no intention of carrying on Street Fighter IV into Hyper Street Fighter IV or Ultra Street Fighter IV, because I'm aware of the mistakes Capcom has made in the past. So whether it would be a different IP or another Street Fighter, we'd like to keep options open. But in terms of Street Fighter IV, this is definitive... Super Street Fighter IV should be the distinctive end. Obviously there can be updates via DLC so perhaps in 2011, we could upload a patch for Super Street Fighter IV 2011 edition that would have tuning and balancing. But as a packaged product, I think this is the last." -So Capcom were the ones who pushed for the other editions. He has said on a few occasions this is the definitive version of the game even putting it on the 3DS when Arcade version was out stating this game proved itself as a great game of balance. If you care about that stuff at all this might be the version for you as it's only missing a few things from the other upgrades.
Ultra Street Fighter 4
-Edition Select -Omega Mode -Offline match replay saves -Complete Final Roster of 44 characters
Tekken 6 AND Tekken Tag 2
-Allows the upload and download of Ghost Data which is a computer generated with your data. Both games still work online for 360 and PS3 so if you were to download however many profiles they want, you will have uniquely behaved AI to fight you forever.
Soul Calibur 5
-Has an Offline Quick Battle mode which simulates looking for an open lobby online. You get to pick from a list of different players around the world in total of 200. 50 easy,50 normal,50 hard and 50 very hard opponents. The opponents here are based on developers and real life people. This is the ONLY GAME where HARADA HIMSELF appears to fight you as a special boss. Even though Devil Jin is not in the game his fighting style is in create a fighter. Harada fights using this style.
Street Fighter x Tekken
-Trial mode with combos for the entire list. Not much here for single players unless you like labbing in training mode since there are basically infinite combinations of teams. -If you actually have friends 4 people can play and you can make a tag team with each person controlling one player.
Dead or Alive 4
-Believe it or not, this game has 0 DLC, everything is on the disc. Before Team Ninja found out about DLC and how much money they could make, they said this was their ultimate creation. They said Dead or Alive never needed a sequel because this was the game they always wanted to make. -Very well programmed AI often hitting max damage combos -Tag mode with unique mechanics such as tag combos.
Marvel Vs Capcom 3
-If you own a 360 or PS3 it is impossible to get the dlc as they removed it from the store. Gamestop has a limited run exclusive disc version for Xbox One with all DLC. This is the only way to play the game in it's complete form from a disc without needing anything else. (If you know a way to share Jill or Shuma without RGH/JTAG please leave a comment below.)
Hyper Street Fighter Anniversary (xbox)
-Backwards compatible with official 360 HDD. -Has Edition Select for Street Fighter 2 for each version. HOWEVER there are 2 major changes from Super Turbo. O.Sagat's Fireballs are slower for some reason and Hyper edition Vega(Claw) has his input messed up for his wall dive. Pretty big deal if playing a tournament, but very minor if just for solo play. Seems to have no other documented changes. -Training mode for Street Fighter 2. This is better than High Def Remix IF you like the old backgrounds. In High Def Remix the backgrounds are always HD.
Street Fighter High Def Remix
-Training mode has displayable hitbox information. -Ported from Dreamcast Online edition, this game is proven to be arcade perfect in older settings. -Can play a re-balanced version that somehow did not achieve it's goal but it is fun.
Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 (xbox)
-Offical Backwards compatible game from Microsoft.
Virtua Fighter 4
-Original version has a Kumite mode with extremely hard cpu opponents based on developers and players. -Has the ability to save your character profile to a memory card and load it to a friends game. You have cosmetic items to collect and edit, so these will transfer over. -Has a programmable AI where you can re-watch it's choices and tell it good or bad. It will adjust it's play style to your liking.
Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution
-It CUT all the features above however it added Quest mode which might be the best solo player content out there. Sega went to arcades around Japan and gathered data from top players and put them into the game. Instead of a Kumite of nonstop hard battles, you travel Japan fighting in arcades playing real people. Adds a lot more cosmetics to collect. -Adds 2 characters Brad Burns and Goh.
Virtua Fighter 5
-Has Quest mode very similar to Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution. Very good mode rated highly. Amazing AI.
Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown
-Digital release only.-Cut quest mode but added Special Sparing. You need to buy all the DLC to unlock Special Sparing. Uniquely programed AI, this is supposed to be the best AI ever implemented into fighting games. Only complaints are that the AI doesn't always do max damage/optimal combos. This is to simulate pressure and not always hitting the best combo. You can set a handicap to life making this negligible. -Adds one new combatant Jean Kujo and brings back the Sumo star Taka-Arashi. SEGA has no plans to make a new game this has all characters from all games and is truly the Final Showdown.
AND THAT's IT.
Smash always has a ton of stuff if you're into that. Shoutout's to Bloody Roar who does not have good solo player modes but has an amazingly deep combat system. Truly a fun game. Of course there are hundreds more games but this is where I stop. If you want to add to the list please do.

About Time I Asked: Skyrim LE Help

Hello,
I will start by saying I pride myself on troubleshooting on my own. I have been playing skyrim for a few years now, and I have learned so much about modding that I didn't know.
However, I used to (about a year ago until recently) be able to play skyrim every day with much more limited knowledge, 255+ mods, and a lot less patches. I never used to run Skyrim through skse, only steam, and yes I would crash but not like this.
About 2 weeks ago Skyrim started to CTD before it even loaded the Bethesda logo. I deleted all references to the game, re-installed everything, worked very hard on my enblocal.ini, skyrimprefs.ini, and skyrim.ini. I will post those below. I have gotten to the point where I can begin a new character, but I consistently and constantly crash at Whiterun--after only a few moments.
I use Alternate Start and have been checking my mods almost one-by-one by choosing to start in Whiterun. I do not know if other towns will crash as well, as Whiterun is where I'm starting and so far...
I reduced to a very limited amount of mods in an attempt to find the problem mod, but I've yet to find it. So far I have uninstalled: skyrim flora overhaul, unique ground covers, natural lighting and vivid atmospheres, climates of tamriel (one of my favorites :( ), Realistic lighting overhaul (another favorite), true storms, Lively Inns and Towns, Populated roads and cities, etc.,..
I have basically deleted all my overhauls and skyrim beautification mods. I found out Skyrim Project Optimization and Unofficial City Patch are incompatible so I removed both. I also removed Immersive citizens.

I literally don't know what else to try. I have re-configured these settings according to every guide I can find.
Other things I've tried: turning off steam overlay, playing in offline mode, launching skse from vortex, playing through steam. I also changed my audio settings and created an exception for skyrim in my firewall.
I tried MO2, but I couldn't for my life get FNIS to work with it so I switched back to Vortex and I will not go back to MO2.
I would appreciate any help; please let me know if you need more information.

Insightful: X019 Interview with Asobo Studio (Flightsim.com)

Reference: https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/content.php?19990-X019-Interview-with-Asobo-Studio
On Friday 15th November 2019, Asobo Studio, who are developing the up and coming Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 showcased their platform at X019 in London. This was the first time a stand had been made available to the public, and the team were on hand to take questions from budding flight simmers and gamers!
During the day, I managed to sit down briefly with Martial Bossard, the lead developer and co-founder of Asobo, so as to talk about the new platform and what it offered to simmers. I had quite a few questions to ask Martial, so I was eager to get started...
Thank you for taking the time to talk to me about the upcoming Microsoft Flight Simulator.
You're welcome.
So, let's get right down to it shall we. This is the first time Microsoft have released a flight simulator in about 15 years, but then in saying that, you guys aren't specifically under Microsoft, but rather Asobo. So how did you come to work on MSFS and how long have you been working on this particular project?
So we've got a long story for this. Microsoft has been partnered with us for the last 10 years I would say, so we've done a lot of projects with them. They were projects with some technical components, so we did an early game for [Xbox] Kinect in which we did a lot of R&D and we also did three titles for HoloLens. We also did a lot of R&D for this title, especially one part of this we did, it is not published in the official SDK for HoloLens. So when it comes to Microsoft to have the idea to bring back this license, they were looking for technologies and a team that could embrace this to make Flight Sim be back. The fact here is Microsoft's own separate technology called Bing Maps means they have the data. They also have a great technology called Azure, so they know how to distribute the data. So they needed a team to embrace this technology and create an experience. It was three years ago now we've been asked to create the first technology demo, the first prototype to see how all of this could happen. As a matter of fact we were also very impressed to see how good it was to take this technology, to mix it with gaming components and to bring back to life and just put a plane here, it was very very very interesting, very very exciting for us. This was the ignition of this project.
One of the biggest things we have seen about the new Microsoft Flight Simulator, is its use of Azure AI. So a lot of people have seen MSFS as both a new simulator for Flight Sim fans, but also a way for Microsoft to really push Azure right to its limits and showcase what it has to offer. So my question is, how much of the simulator is controlled by Azure such as the flight dynamics and Bing Maps rendering?
No, no, no. Every calculation being done here is on the PC. The rendering is all locally on a PC, and the simulation is computed locally on the PC. The Azure part is here just to deliver data. You have the Bing Database which is not something you would be able to store on your machine; it's more than two petabytes of data. You cannot imagine a simulation asking people to buy two petabytes of hard drives. For the cloud computing, we also need some extra information because Bing is incredible! You've got a lot of data, but the 3D is only for here about 400 cities in the world, so to bring some 3D objects into the world you need some computations to guess where buildings are, the shape they've got, the size, the color of the roof, everything is computed on Azure and then distributed. It's another database that the user will be connected in so that they can see all of this locally and apart from buildings and Bing Maps, aerials and 3D objects, we also need the tree coverage. We also need the AI to detect every tree on the planet, so we have 1.5 trillion trees computed. So we have this database and another database both online all distributed by Azure. When you mix all of this information, download that, you are streaming the data. The computation, every single calculation for the simulation and the rendering is then all done locally.
As it stands there are three different methods that the simulator will use for rendering scenery: an online mode, a hybrid mode where you can download data locally, and finally an offline mode. How do the online and offline modes compare to each other? As you say there is a lot of streaming, and so if you didn't have an online connection, would the simulator still look as good?
I can't guarantee that you will get the exact same experience because that will not be true. The fact is if you like to play in the same area a lot such as Corsica, if you dedicated enough drive space, you will be able to just download the database locally so you can completely be offline. Plus in some countries you will have data gaps, if you don't want these gaps to be completely filled by Flight Simulator, you can download this to have it locally on a hard drive so you can have the exact same quality of flying on offline if you have done the cache before. So we still have a complete offline mode, and on this mode you will see that we have some data on the hard drive locally so you've got all the roads, most of the blueprints for buildings so you can generate them, we have some parts of the tree mask and the shapes of the coasts, basically if you've only got the offline mode, you will still be able to fly VFR. This is very important for us as this is the biggest novelty we are bringing into the world of Flight Simulations because in the past it was pretty easy to program an IFR flight and fly with your instruments but here it's a matter of fact we want you to fly some VFR flights, be able to do some navigation on a map and after that do this flight within the simulation so you can still do that offline. We you have sufficient information to have a proper simulation experience, but if you want to have the complete experience with kind of graphics we have on videos and what you have experienced here today, then it would be better to do some cache or be completely online.
Regarding the default aircraft list, yesterday you mentioned that you now have partnerships with Boeing, Airbus, Diamond, Cessna, Piper and others, so what default aircraft do you plan to have included and are there any more that you're ready to announce?
I will let you do the guess. You have seen the videos we have released so far, the only thing that I can say is that you haven't seen all of them. Whereas apart from that I will not give you any new names or models.
As well as a simulator for the PC, it was also mentioned that we will see an Xbox release for Microsoft Flight Simulator. How do you see this happening and will there be any differences between the two platforms?
We don't see Xbox as a constraint, it's a unified platform so we know the capacity of its systems but we also know that Xbox is open for keyboard and mouse. You can already get HOTAS, they are already available so you can have a proper experience on Xbox, but I won't want it talk about it as the team is completely dedicated to PC. It's a simulation it'll be PC first so we would like to talk about the PC as at the moment it is where the team is completely focused, and then we will try to bring to a larger audience the same exact experience. So we don't want to have two situations, it will be the exact same experience but probably adapt to the capacity of each machine. For example you have some concerns because you don't have a high [internet] bandwidth we are bringing the solution of doing some cache. On Xbox we are going to choose other solutions but for now its PC, we'll talk about the PC version only and as this is where the core experience is built right now.
I can imagine that developing a simulator of this scale where the whole planet is being simulated, is no easy task. Are there any challenges you have faced in terms of generating not only the world, but also the aircraft and getting everything to work together?
So the feeling we have got is we are not doing any dedicated work on one particular place, we are only building systems. So when the system is working on one side of the planet, this should also work for the opposite side of the planet too. We are working on systems that recreate the world. Basically it's interesting as yesterday somebody from the press who had access to the whole map coverage just came back from Oman so they asked us to go to a very specific place so you can be sure that nobody on the team ever flew onto that specific place so it's always a surprise for us. He was so pleased and this was very rewarding for the team because even in some places we have never been we know that the system is still working so the buildings were there, the ocean was placed and rendered and everything was working. By doing this systematic method it should work everywhere. The beauty of it, because it's a system it will always be updated, it's based on a database that can be completed, I think we're going to bring a really good experience on Day 1 and it's something that is going to be improved the next year too.
One thing that was mentioned in the past but never really expanded on in any detail was the topic of backwards compatibility. So does this mean I could potentially download an old FSX aircraft and run it on the new simulator?
This is a bit tricky because the world of flight simulation has been kept away from Microsoft for the last decade, so a lot of people have done a lot of things. This means it is impossible for us to say that every single add-on is going to work by default on backwards compatibility. As a result we're not really talking about that, not because we don't want to, but it's because we cannot guarantee that every single aircraft will still be working. Plus on some third-parties they've got licenses that say you've got an aircraft for a dedicated Flight Simulator. We don't want to be into that business, it's a relationship you should get between the customers and the manufacturers, so we don't intend to be into that. The fact is we've built this new simulator upon FSX. So every time we wanted to start a new system we based that on what FSX did. After that we got some feedback from ourselves, from pilots, from test pilots and from manufacturers telling us where to bring some improvements and so some parts of the product have been completely re-done such as the physics was CG-Centric in FSX but not anymore. Then we've got thousands of calculations now on every point of the wings and the fuselage so it's completely new. But everything has been started by taking the FSX piece of code, make that work then have it improved. So it's a bit tricky to talk about backwards compatibility because of the licensing, because of the improvements we have done and because even if we did make it backwards compatible you should experience another simulation. That said, we also plan to add an option that allows you to experience the simulation exactly like you did in FSX. To be completely honest we've also been talking to ACES Team members, they have tried the new Flight Sim and I hope you won't feel the need to go back.
Does this mean then that deep deep down, there is still a little bit of FSX still there and that this new simulator has been built on top of that?
Sure! I don't say that everything has stayed and been changed, but every time we wanted to make a new feature, FSX has always been the starting point. But like I told you, everything around the physics, it has been completely redone. If you look at the code now and do a quick comparison, then it has changed a lot.
Will that mean the folder structure within the simulator game files will stay the same as it was before?
If you want, you will still be able to find the organisation, but we also plan to bring in a way of doing packaging, where it will be simpler for people to manage their dependencies so I'm still hoping that nobody will have the need to go back, even if it's still possible, so it's a mixture of new technologies and a new way to do things and to respect what is the legacy and being able to understand what people are used to and not to put that away. But we are still hoping that people are looking for a more modern way to do stuff and when I say modern, I also mean easier.
A lot of Microsoft's more modern games are available on both the Microsoft Store and Xbox Console Companion, but...you cannot access the game files directly. So when it comes to add-on aircraft, will people be able to download them online or will it be a little more locked off or potentially only payware?
We are not talking about that just yet. We are going to do some communications regarding add-ons, but not today. The only thing I can say is that we have made some partnerships have been announced, so we are talking to third-parties so we can develop an easier way to create content. So the fact is, the same tool used to create the experience is the same SDK we use today. It is not like we have super high quality tools then we will deliver the light version of this. We are doing the experience with the tools that will be delivered in the SDK and everybody will have an access to that. The fact that you are able to trigger the simulator to the developer mode and on this developer mode you will have access to everything that allows you to create planes, sceneries and missions, everything that was done by the person on FSX in what I would say the tooled way, now it's coming with a proper SDK embedded into the simulation.
Moving on to a hardware question, do you know what minimum specifications are required in order to run the new simulator? For example...could someone on their 2012 laptop run it, or would it need to be a newer top-end system?
I won't say anything right now for many reasons. The first one is that this game is still in development, so we know we've that we intend to optimise the experience a lot so it would be a bit stupid for us to bring numbers now because we know it is going to change. The experience had today was approximately 40 fps, this is using a computer you can buy, you have not experienced something that was powered by any prototypes or anything you can't afford. Everything you can make this PC on your own. This was rendered on a 4K resolution at 40 fps already, so with optimisations and everything you will have a proper experience if you've got a PC for gamers. We won't talk about Laptops you can find for €500 or £500 in the UK, but if you have got a PC for gamers you should then get a very good experience.
And so on to my last question, and that is do you have any idea as to when the new simulator will be released? We all know that you are in the early stages of releasing the alphas (well I say releasing, there has been a delay with that), but do you know when the simulator will come to us mortals?
Yes, I have an idea. laughter So my answer is yes.
Also, do you know how the simulator will be priced? In other words, will this be a subscription payment, or a one-time purchase?
If you want to talk about business, you should talk to Microsoft. I can talk about everything technical, the content and the experience, but for everything around business it's not my area. So maybe with some PR at Microsoft but otherwise I cannot tell.
Thank you very much for your time.
It was a pleasure to meet you, and also having you to see this experience and to find your ways. It means probably we are on a good path. That being said after the event in September, seeing all of the simmer and real pilots being able to take off and being able to play and enjoy the scenery as well as see proper landings like what you've seen, this is very rewarding for the team.

  • Ease up there tiger! Thousands of other people are also turning on their xboxes for the first time. Its gonna be a little clogged.
  • System resources are prioritized for gameplay and game streaming over background downloads. Even if a game is running in the background, a download will not run at full speed. You can force quit the game (highlight the game on the main menu, press the hamburger button and choose "quit") or wait for a few minutes for the game to suspend and downloads will then run at full speed.

* OMG i know you mentioned NAT twice already, but nothing works!

  • Double NATs are probably the most common issue impacting NAT types that we come across. This typically happens when you have a gateway (modem + router combo) supplied by your ISP and then put a retail router (Netgear, DLink, etc) in front of the gateway.
  • NERD SPEAK: The console uses UPnP to request port mappings automatically. UPnP discovery is via broadcast, so the console can only see the first router in front of it to request port mappings.
  • TLDR - Unless your home network is configured correctly, the Xbox only works properly with ONE router connected to it. If you have more than one, aka a double NAT, either remove one of the routers or place the gateway into "bridged" mode to disable router functionality on that device. No idea how to do that? Call your ISP.

* "I don't care about this new-fangled internet stuff. How do i play offline?"
